UFC vs Strikeforce: The Champions Face Off

A hypothetical comparison of the UFC and Strikeforce champions and how a fight would end if each were to do battle

The UFC is notorious for being the “bully” of MMA promotions, with counter-programming and buyouts of its biggest competitors like PRIDE Fighting Championships; it has been well known not to compete with the resources and money of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The biggest competitor to the thrown lately has certainly been Strikeforce, and the debate amongst followers of both organizations is, who’s got the better fighters? So, let’s take a ride on the “what if” train and throw the champs of each promotion in the cage together!

Rd. 1 Lightweight Champions: Gilbert Melendez vs. Frankie Edgar

The grappler vs. the wrestler. Frankie Edgar puts on a great display of boxing, with pin point combos and awesome “bob and weave,” and I do see him trying to take charge of the fight early and end it quick, however, with so many fights ending on the ground I don’t see him lasting too long on his feet and resorting to what he knows best. Gilbert Melendez would land a few very solid blows that would have Frankie Edgar looking for a takedown, the only problem with that is I don’t see Edgar maintaining control for too long with Melendez on his back.

DECISION: GILBERT MELENDEZ via 3rd Rd. SUBMISSION

Rd. 2 Welterweight Champions: Nick Diaz vs. Georges St. Pierre

This fight is so one sided only a moron would bet on it! GSP is an extremely well rounded fighter, with Olympic caliber wrestling, world class jiu-jitsu, and crisp striking. As always, Diaz would have the reach advantage and would definitely try to pick apart GSP, knowing he wouldn’t be able to get the double leg on the UFC champ any time this decade! The fight would stay standing for the first round, and Diaz will have the advantage on the judges’ cards. St.Pierre, feeling the need for 12 Aspirin thanks to the jab of Nick Diaz, will open the second round with a quick take down. The fight wouldn’t go anywhere else, and unless Diaz could pull out a kimora or a triangle choke, the fight would be stopped!

DECISION: GEORGES ST. PIERRE via 2nd Rd. GROUND AND POUND

Rd. 3 Middleweight Champions: Anderson Silva vs. No One!

With Jake Shields vacating his belt for a contract with the UFC, this leaves the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship up for grabs! With that being said, let’s dive into this fight! Anderson Silva squares off with himself, and comes out… DANCING! The roar of Michael Jackson’s “Don’t stop til’ you get enough” echoes throughout the MGM Grand! He kicks, he spins, he does a split, the champ is here!

DECISION: ANDERSON SILVA via 1st Rd. FUNKY MOVES!

Rd. 4 Light Heavyweight Champions: “King Mo” Lawal vs. “Shogun” Rua

As the volume of MJ’s jam settles and we get back to a serious note, we take a look at the light heavyweight division. “King Mo” has definitely gained the respect of the Strikeforce fans, as he pummeled his way to the No. 1 spot. But is he still too green for the likes of Shogun? Muhammed is a great wrestler, and he has incredible strength, and is very driven. Shogun lost a lot of hype after his loss to Forrest Griffin, but after injury and a serious fight camp Shogun looks better than ever! I don’t think Lawal has fought a strong enough caliber of fighter to expect what Rua would bring to him, and I truly believe no one is taking out Shogun any time soon! King Mo is an awesome prospect, and a force to be reckoned with, but if King Mo is Tropical Storm, he would simply be blown away by Hurricane Rua at this point in his career!

DECISION: SHOGUN RUA via 1st Rd. TKO

Rd. 5 Heavyweight Champions: Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem

These boys are HUGE! REALLY HUGE! Brock Lesnar is built like an ox, and Overeem… well he’s an ox too! The biggest issue anyone has had with Brock is neutralizing the size advantage. He is the biggest fighter in the UFC as far as girth goes since Super Heavyweights were allowed. However, as in the case with King Mo, I think Alistair just has a little too much experience to fall for the barbaric style of Lesnar. Overeem is a few inches taller and has a reach advantage. One thing Brock hasn’t had to deal with is another fighter as quick as he is for their stature. Alistair has knees… one thing you rarely see in this division. This fight wouldn’t even be a good fight to me, exciting yes, but good no. Brock would come out swinging and looking for the ground and pound, but after one well aimed knee, I truly believe Brock will be done.

DECISION: ALISTAIR OVEREEM via 1st Rd. KO

Excluding the Anderson Silva dance-a-thon it seems I am no help to ending the debate between the quality of fighters in the top promotions. And seeing as the UFC wouldn’t co-promote to get Brock vs. Fedor, I don’t see this Night of Champions ever happening. So it seems as if there is only one way to settle this debate between you and your buddy. “Twilight” style t-shirts and an all out nationwide riot of “Team UFC” vs. “Team Strikeforce”! Let the games begin!
