A much-anticipated card finally came together from the Treasure Bay Casino at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, MS. The nine-bout production featured a heavyweight attraction between 255-pound former wrestler, Bobby Lashley and mammoth 330-pound kick-boxer, Bob “The Beast” Sapp. Once the highly-publicized bout began, Lashley disposed of the mountain of a man at the 3:17 mark of the 1st round.

Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel was successful, in a co-main event bout, by stopping Brazilian, Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo in the first round with strikes. Favorites Chris Horodecki, Javier Vasquez, and Affliction front-man Tom Atencio were also among those that were victorious.

Upset-minded Waachim Spiritwolf used precision striking to KO his opponent, Brett Cooper, thus leaving him in limbo as to whether he will remain on the upcoming August 1st Affliction card. James Orso also surprised former The Ultimate Fighter competitor, Danny Abaddi with a dominating unanimous decision victory.

A trend was established early in the night, as six of the main card bouts were finished in the 1st round, two were stopped in the 2nd and only one fight went all three rounds. The popular mode of operation was submissions, as five of the main card fights were ended early with submissions, two by (T) KO and one went to the judges’ scorecards.

Here is a detailed look at some of the featured match-ups:

Tom Atencio vs. Randy Hedderick

Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio made his first appearance in four plus years a memorable one. He fought back after some early trouble from Gulf Port, Mississippi resident, Randy Hedderick, to dominate the 2nd round and ultimately secure the TKO win.

Randy Hedderick began the 1st round with a barrage of straight right hands that caught the forty-two year old, Atencio, dropping him twice in the initial round. Atencio, though rocked, returned to his feet to clinch with Hedderick and remained there for the majority of the round.

Atencio took a different approach seconds into the 2nd round by dropping Hedderick with a well-timed leg sweep. Picking himself back up, Hedderick looked to be wearing a broken nose and was extremely fatigued. At this point Atencio was able to pick his opponent apart with some solid strikes before the 2nd round bell sounded.

Hedderick (1-1) was unable to answer the bell for the start of the 3rd round, awarding Atencio (2-0) his second victory in as many fights. Atencio made it clear that this fight would be his last but defended his much younger opponent, giving him praise for even stepping inside the cage.

Chris Horodecki vs. William Sriyapai

In what was expected to be a back-and-forth stand-up slugfest, instead turned into a grappling match, dominated by former International Fight League cornerstone, Chris Horodecki. Horodecki returned from a 14-month layoff to surprise ten-year veteran, William “The Bull” Sriyapai.

Horodecki rushed Sriyapai within the first minute, eventually putting him on his back. As quickly as the fight went to the ground, Horodecki was just as quick to take the back of his opponent and get both arms in position for a submission. Sriyapai denied Horodecki from the submission for as long as he could until Horodecki forced him to defend strikes as well. “The Bull” exposed his neck and was forced to tap via rear naked choke at the 4:02 mark of the 1st round.

Horodecki (13-1) is successful for the second consecutive fight and will try and make it three in a row after facing Dan Lauzon at Affliction: Trilogy on August 1st. William Sriyapai (12-5) tasted defeat for just the second time in his last eleven fights.

Waachim Spiritwolf vs. Brett Cooper

King of the Cage veteran William Spiritwolf surprised California resident Brett Cooper in a featured welterweight bout. It was billed as a tune-up match for Cooper, who is tentatively scheduled to participate on this summer’s Affliction: Trilogy fight card.

Cooper looked solid early by landing some soft leg kicks which caught the inside of his opponents’ leg. Spiritwolf answered the leg kicks with a right hook that dropped his opponent to the canvas. Seeing his opportunity, Spiritwolf fired continuous punches to Cooper, who had no answer, forcing the referee to halt the match at the 3:41 mark in the 1st round. Cooper stood up soon after the referee intervened and looked confused as he walked in circles.

The win for Spiritwolf (6-4) marks his second consecutive and his 5th career (T) KO. Cooper (9-5) had his respectable six-fight win streak snapped with his first loss since April 2007. It also puts his August 1st spot on the Affliction: Trilogy card in serious jeopardy.

Javier Vasquez vs. Mark Kergosien

Grappling ace, Javier Vasquez entered the cage for the first time in more than eighteen months against Mark Kergosien. Kergosien, a last minute replacement for Din Thomas who had complications from cutting weight, will have a hard time forgetting his debut match against the accomplished jiu-jitsu expert. Vasquez made quick work of Kergosien, submitting him in the 1st round only 59 seconds in.

Kergosien tried to play it smart by clinching with Vasquez but turned his attention to a takedown attempt shortly after. As the fighters hit the ground, Vasquez transitioned to dominant position and locked in a tight guillotine choke. Kergosien attempted to fight the submission but was in deeper trouble when he fell to bottom position, which made the choke tighter. Kergosien only had one option remaining and tapped out only 59 seconds into the 1st round.

Vasquez (13-2), who announced his retirement in 2007, returned in impressive fashion by recording his eighth career submission victory. The efficient Vasquez has been victorious in his last four fights and in eleven of his last twelve overall. Kergosien (0-1) will take a step backwards in competition, proving that he was not ready for top-level featherweights such as Vasquez.

Gilbert Yvel vs. Pedro Rizzo

The co-main event was a match-up between two experienced MMA veterans trying to get back to consistent top-level MMA competition. Gilbert Yvel took a step in that direction by knocking out the former UFC champion 2:10 into the 1st round.

Rizzo, 35, immediately took Yvel to the ground with a leg sweep, the one area that he is at a disadvantage, and spent a brief period of time working his ground and pound. Not taking much damage, Yvel was able to scramble back to a standing position where he began to throw heavy haymakers. He finally connected with a long left hook followed by a hard head kick, dropping the Brazilian unconscious on his back. The referee didn’t stop the fight so Yvel continued the onslaught for two more unanswered punches until the fight was stopped.

Yvel (36-13-1, 1 NC) is victorious for the first time since his January loss to number one contender, Josh Barnett. Overall, Yvel has won eight of his last nine fights. He how has recorded 31 of 36 of his wins by (T) KO. His next test will be against “The Headhunter” Paul Buentello at the August Affliction show. Rizzo (16-9) has lost two in a row and four of his last six.

Bobby Lashley vs. Bob Sapp

Many critics looked at the size differential, Lashley (255-lbs) to Sapp (332-lbs), as a serious threat to stop Lashley’s undefeated streak. The critics couldn’t be more wrong, Lashley overcame the size disadvantage by making Sapp tap-out 3:17 into the 1st round.

Somewhere in the hype before the fight, Bobby Lashley made a claim that he would attempt to stand with the K-1 star. He must have re-thought his strategy, instead immediately taking Sapp to the floor with a perfectly executed double-leg takedown. With Sapp on his back, the former NAIA wrestling champ gradually increased his power in his punches. The punches had intent behind them, causing Sapp to tap not once, but twice, during the last twenty seconds of the fight.

Lashley (4-0), who has fought four times in the last eighteen months, wants to fight possibly two more times in 2009. He has stopped three of his four opponents at this point in his career, all three coming in the first five minutes. Bob Sapp (10-5-1) has lost two in a row and three of his last four. All three of his most recent losses have come within the first two minutes of the fight.
