Dan “Dragon” Spohn vs “Big” John Hawk

August 28th, 2010

This fight has been a long time coming, originally scheduled for Fight Nite in the Flats VI. Hawk is the current NAAFS Pro Heavyweight Series Champion. Hawk has the Strong Style nation escorting him to the cage.  As previously mentioned in our interview, John Hawk always has colored hair for his fights. Tonight, his black mohawk with red on the sides match his red and black Clinch Gear trunks. Hawk’s beard and goatee are even matching his color scheme. Hawk looks cool and composed, as does Spohn. They receive their instructions, touch gloves, and here we go.

Spohn is fighting  southpaw, Hawk orthodox. Hawk looks for a takedown and Spohn stuffs it. Spohn looks for a shot and Hawk catches him with a few knees. Hawk digs for and scores a takedown. Spohn has a guillotine, but has Hawk to his side. Spohn lets go of the choke and Hawk postures up. Marcus Marinelli and Pablo Castro are shouting instructions but the rest of the arena is quiet. Hawk is following instructions and is inflicting lots of damage to the ribs of Spohn. Hawk deals more punishment and Spohn looks to be weary. Round 1 ends with Hawk scoring a vast majority of the damage. 10-9 for John Hawk.

Round 2 begins with a flurry of punches. Spohn grabs a guillotine and Hawk slips free. Spohn lands a solid knee to the face of Hawk. Spohn scores a takedown and cuts Hawk’s eyebrow with an elbow. Hawk is working a high guard and even looks for a triangle or armbar before going back to a lower guard. Spohn takes Hawk’s back and rains down punches. Both men are sweating profusely and Spohn slides off and goes to his back. Hawk ends up in Spohn’s guard. 10-9 for Spohn.

Spohn is looking sharp with his hands. Hawk takes Spohn to the cage and begins to knee the legs of Spohn.  Hawk is bringing the thunder with knees against the cage. Spohn inadvertently kicks Hawk to the groin and Hawk catches his wind. Spohn with some high kicks and Hawk has a solid chin. Hawk presses the action against the cage again. Hawk with footstomps, knees and dirty boxing. Spohn is throwing wild punches that glance off of Hawk’s head. Hawk scores a takedown and begins to grind. The takedown may have won the fight for Hawk as I had each fighter winning a round to this point. Hawk seems to have woken up and is putting the pressure on.  The fighters hug in the center of the cage and we await the decision.

Dan “The Dragon” Spohn takes the fight by unanimous decision. Spohn is a gracious winner and thanks a multitude of sponsors, his fans, and the NAAFS.

Mike Nesto vs. Donny “Eagle Eye” Walker

August 28th, 2010

The lights go down and the expertly narrated hype video rolls on the big screens. The NAAFS Pro Series Featherweight Title is on the line here. Now would be a good time to let the readers know about www.IntimidationClothing.com and www.IntimidationMMA.com, a proud sponsor of Donny “Eagle Eye” Walker. Walker is  also sponsored by profighting-fans.com Ever hear of those guys? Check out Intimidation for the latest in MMA-themed apparel, including the recently-released Donny Walker signature t-shirt. Many in attendance tonight are sporting the shirts and they are sharp-looking in person.

GriffonRawl brings Walker out to the cage and all are clad in the previously-mentioned Donny Walker Signature T-Shirt. Nesto is the 2006 NAAFS Amateur Lightweight Champion. Both fighters have comparable builds, but Nesto is known for his Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Nessto takes  quick shot and Donny is fighting hit hard. Nesto gets the takedown and Donny gets guard. Nesto looks for a D’Arce choke and Donny fights through it. Another D’Arce attempt and Donny turns into Nesto. Nesto drops for a guillotine, bails and moves to rubber guard. Nesto is one cool customer as is Walker, who is fighting of submission after submission. Nesto throws up a triangle and cuts Donny’s hairline. Nesto transitions to an armbar and nearly submits Walker, who has his hand poised to tap. Walker holds tough as round 1 ends. 10-9 for Nesto, possibly 10-8 with a dozen or more submission attempts.

The doctor takes a long hard look at the cut on Walker’s head and says Walker is good to go. Nesto shoots quickly and Walker adjusts and refuses to be taken down. Nesto is still working for the takedown. Walker reverses position and scores the takedown and moves to half guard. Walker is raining down punches now. Back to Nesto’s guard. Nesto hips up and Walker goes for a very unconventional spinning kick towards the grounded Nesto. Nesto throws more elbows and has cut the other side of Walker’s forehead. Round 2 10-9 Walker.

Nesto shoots to begin round 3 and after a brief scramble, Walker slips loose. Nesto wants Walker to jump into his guard but Walker wants a stand-up fight. Front kick by Walker. Low blow by Walker and Nesto is given time to regain his breath. There is a short break in the action as the referee is reattaching the padding to one of the cage posts. Back to action and Nesto shoots. Walker is not giving it up easily. Nesto is eating elbows for his efforts. Nesto goes to his back and Walker is on his feet. Walker throws an errant ax kick and catches Nesto below the belt as time expires. Walker10-9.

Round 4. Walker throws a jumping spinning kick and Nesto shoots for a takedown.  Walker ends up on top and begins grinding away. Walker looks to pass and the referee stands the fight up due to lack of action. Nesto shoots and eats a knee. Walker throws hammer fists and elbows to the skull of Nesto. Nesto cannot finish the takedown.  Walker beckons Nesto to stand up.  Walker gets in sideback control and is giving Nesto a beating. Knees to the ribs, body and head punches. Since Round 1, we have seen a different Donny Walker and a tired Mike Nesto. Round 4, no question, goes to Donny Walker.

The fighters touch gloves to start round 5. Nesto on a shot. He takes walker to his butt. Walker’s back to the cage and now to his feet. Nesto in on yet another shot. Walker seems to be calculating his next move, holding onto the punches and elbows that he threw previously. Nesto goes to his back and Walker begins peppering the hammer fists. Nesto keeps digging for the takedown. Walker’s elbows to the ribs of Nesto are really making Nesto wince. Nesto will not abandon the single leg and Walker keeps defending. Nesto scores the takedown at the buzzer and this fight is going to the cards. The fighters hug in the center of the cage. Great sportsmanship, regardless of the winner.  The amount of punishment dished out by the fighters will leave both men sore for the next few days.

The judges score the fight for Donny Walker in a unanimous decision. The Madison Police Department now has a champion among their ranks. Congratulations to new NAAFS Featherweight Pro Series Donny Walker.

In the post-fight interview, Walker is asked about the possibility of a call-up to the WEC, but Donny says he will fight no matter where he is signed.  Nesto hangs out in the cage to once again congratulate Walker. Class act, that Nesto.

UFC 118 Pay-per-View Play-by-Play: Nate Diaz (12-5) vs. Marcus Davis (22-7)

August 28th, 2010

Tonight’s UFC 118 live blog is brought to you by Fighters Guard MMA Agents and Intimidation MMA Apparel.

1st round – This welterweight bout is refereed by Yves Lavigne.  Davis comes out and connects with a left but takes a couple of strikes from Diaz.  Diaz is playing up to the crowd, and gets caught by a Davis exchange.  Diaz makes it back to his feet and presses Davis against the cage.  As the seperate, both fighters are bloodied.  Diaz nails Davis with a sharp left hand, but Davis answers with a left hand of his own.  Davis hits with a nice combination, but again is countered by a Diaz combo.  Diaz is working kicks now and then decides to clinch with Davis.  Diaz goes in for the takedown, and begins to work knees on Davis.  Davis seperates and misses with a couple wild left hands.  Diaz looks to be more accurate with his strikes, however Davis is getting some through as well.  Davis hits with a hard left hand, but misses with a combo as the bell ends.  (Diaz 10-9)

2nd round – Davis looks to be battered as he comes out for the 2nd; Diaz looks to be the fresher fighter.  After a quick check from the doctor, the action continues.  Dacis hits with a left hand, but Diaz clips him with some combinations.  Diaz initiates a clinch and they are against the octagon fence.  Diaz continues to work for the takedown, however Davis escapes and squares off in front of him.  Diaz begins to pick Davis apart connecting with several jabs and hooks.  Diaz adds a front kick and a left hook.  Davis turns his attention to Diaz body, but takes several shots to the face for his trouble.  Davis now comes in and holds Diaz, but soon lets go.  Diaz now has Davis’ face bleeding badly, but Davis continues to push forward and now utilizes a couple of leg kicks.  Diaz works his short jabs and often finds a home on Davis’ face.  Davis is working his head movement and tries to hit with another leg kick, however Diaz catches Davis and shoots in for the takedown.  Davis defends the takedown and takes Diaz to the ground as the round ends.  (Diaz 10-9)

3rd round – Davis’ right eye is almost swelled completely shut as he stands for the final round.  Diaz looks fairly fresh coming out for the 3rd round.  The action begins and both fighters are moving just fine.  Diaz works more short jabs and hooks and adds a couple of kicks as well.  Davis cant find his distance with his punches but does hit with a nice leg kick.  Diaz initiates a clinch and presses Davis against the fence.  Davis breaks free and squares off trading with Diaz.  Both fighters are taking their turns catching each other with punches.  Diaz is hitting Davis with several combos and Davis is only finding an occasional home for his punches.  Davis’ right eye is swolled almost twice the normal size.  Diaz gets the fight to the ground with a takedown.  He begins to work from top position and passes Davis’ guard.  Diaz has Davis in a guillotine and squeezes until Davis goes unconscious.  The referee steps in and calls an end to the fight.

Official Decision – Diaz over Davis via 3rd round (4:02) submission

Terry Blackwell vs. Frank “The Tank” Carabello

August 28th, 2010

Carabello is the former Interim NAAFS Pro Series Lightweight Champion and had the 2008 NAAFS Knockout of the Year. If memory serves me, Carabello briefly fought for Strong Style, but now he fights for Fearless Fight Team.

It took all of about 6 seconds for the audience to start a “Frank the Tank” chant. I cannot stop replaying the scene from Old School in my head.  He gonna do one. He gonna do one.  The opening minutes are a feeling out process and Carabello is throwing more  strikes. Lots of kicks and jabs and hooks out of Carabello.  A frenzy of action Carabello goes down and Blackwell drops Carabello momentarily with a punch. Carabello comes up into a shot and Blackwell snatches a standing guillotine and presses it into the cage where he peppers Carabello with knees until the round ends. Tough round to score. 10-9 Blackwell on the strength of his knockdown and guillotine attempt.

Round 2 and more feeling out on the feet. Blackwell is blocking everything punchwise that Carabellow throws at him. Neither fighter shows any sign of taking the fight to the ground. If they re content with a standup war, so am I.  Blackwell has a nasty looking welt on the inside of his lead (left) leg from Carabello’s kicks. Lots of jabbing and circling and the crowd is getting antsy. More “Frank the Tank”  chants. Blackwell looks for a shot and is unable to take it down. Carabello throws a wild spinning backfist and the action comes to a close in round 2.  Close round for Carabello 10-9.

According to my incredibly unbiased and more incredibly unofficial card, I have the fight as even. The winner of this round could take the fight.  Both fighters seem to want to stay at a far range from the other. The punches that land are blocked and the leg kicks just glance. Carbello is swinging wildly and is striking with more urgency at this point. Wild sho attempt by Terry and Carabello shoves him away.  More “Frank the Tank: chants. Hopefully there will be no streaking through the quad and into the gymnasium. The action is picking up as time draws to a close. Blackwell seems to have woken up and is bringin the pressure. Carabello swings wildly as Blackwell backs away.  Time expires and Carabello jumps on top of the cage as if he has the fight in the bag.

This one is going to the judges’ scorecards. After 3 rounds, all 3 judges have the bout for Frank “The Tank” Carabello by score of 29-28.  A victory video for Frank “The Tank” Carabello.

Jeremy Holm vs. Stipe Miocic

August 28th, 2010

Jessica Eye is interviewed between fights to hype her upcoming fight at Eve of Destruction against Marissa Caldwell. Eye is pumped and ready. If you haven’t already, make sure you get your tickets for that event in September, it is bound to be exciting!

Miocic is from Strong Style and according to my interview with John Hawk, Stipe is his toughest competition at Strong Style. Stipe has the Strong Style faithful in his corner and looks very calm in the corner during introductions. The first minute is a feeling out process, but when Stipe gets his opponent’s timing, he drops Holm with a heavy right and brings the referee in with a flurry of punches. Your winner by first round TKO is Stipe Miocic.
