UFC 105 Overachiever vs Underachiever

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Randy “The Natural” Couture vs. Brandon “The Truth” Vera
It is the main event that isn’t; with Couture who has lost 3 of his last 5, including 2 straight steps into the octagon matched up against Vera who has split his last 6 fights including a loss to Tim Sylvia, yeah the Tim Sylvia who is now a freak show in the AA of MMA.  The only thing compelling about this tilt is that these two men are polar opposites, as “The Natural,” who was thought to be a great grappler and not much more as he began his UFC career, takes on a man in “The Truth” who once said “I will own both the light heavyweight and heavyweight titles at once.”  Talk about a battle of the ultimate humble human versus the ultimate hype machine!  I’m going to buy into Vera’s own hype on this one, maybe in hopes that Couture proves myself and everyone else wrong one more time and gets another shot at the 205 pound title.  I see Vera using his reach to deflect Randy’s single and double attempts and he is able to pepper the old man until he is able for stuff a shot and sink in a guillotine choke in the later portion of the second round.

Mike Swick vs. Dan Hardy
Can you say the 170 pound version of the above fight!  Swick was an afterthought when he fell short of this run at TUF, while Hardy has talked his way into the casual fans MMA encyclopedia.  Swick has won 8 of 9 with 6 of those fights ending early; Hardy is undefeated in the UFC at 3-0, but has two split decisions on his resume.  I don’t see those close calls catching up to the Irishman in this fight, because it won’t be close.  Swick wins by brutality as his corner is left yelling “Finish Him” like frat boys playing Mortal Kombat circa 1994!

Michael Bisping vs. Denis Kang
I’m not sure how my pendulum swing in this one, I believe concussions have a huge effect in MMA and “The Count” suffered a very severe one at the hands of Hendo. Meanwhile Kang is streakier than Notre Dame football during the Weis era.  Both of these guys like to bang with 23 KO’s between them, but I feel that Bisping with be a little hesitant to throw down and Kang takes full advantage with an easy 30-27 decision on the count of Mike’s willingness to run!

As for the rest of the card, it is a good thing it is on Spike and I don’t have to shell out $50 to see it! The only name I am looking forward to see is Paul Taylor, if you haven’t seen him fight…DON’T BLINK!

Interview with Ohio Resident Matt “The Immortal” Brown

The Triangle Choke

Matt Brown

Matt Brown, a Xenia Ohio native, steps back in the cage after a long layoff which included a personal tragedy and a professional set back.  Brown last competed in front of his home crowd at UFC 96 (March 2009) where he defeated Pete Sell in impressive fashion.  Brown squares off against former Ultimate Fighter Champion James Wilks at UFC 105 in England.  Brown spoke about the fight and the layoff with ProFighting-Fans.com Editor-in-Chief Scott Dryden.

SD- You have had a lot of things happen since your last fight.  Talk about what has transpired and how things are going for you right now

MB- Everything is looking good right now.  I pretty much got by as I had a goal to reach and this fight to focus on.  That has pretty much kept me sane.  It is good I do this because it is hard to say what I would have done.  Considering the circumstances everything has worked out as good as I could have expected

SD- For those that don’t know your father passed away and you had a fight with Anthony Johnson who had to back out due to an injury.  Have you been training full time since all of this took place

MB- I was injured then as well so I didn’t except any replacements for the Johnson fight.  That really worked out well.  I didn’t get to train much over the summer because I was spending time with my dad.  When he backed out of that fight it basically worked out.  It was good for me so I could spend time with my dad.

SD- You have a tough challenge in front of you in the form of James Wilks.  Wilks had an impressive victory over DaMarques Johnson.  What are your thoughts on Wilks

MB- You are actually the 1st person who called his victory impressive.  I think most people have been pretty unimpressed with him.  Maybe they just don’t like him or whatever.  I definitely think he has a lot more to show and a lot more to offer than what we have seen so far.  I know how much I improved after the Ultimate Fighter show so I’m expecting Wilks to come out far better than what we have seen.  I see him as a legitimate and tough challenge

SD- Wilks is originally from the UK.  What are you expecting from the crowd

MB- Man, I’ve heard the crowd over there is crazy.  I expect them to boo and to throw things at me.  It doesn’t really make a difference to me because there is only going to be one other guy in the cage with me

SD- With the long time spent away from fighting and training for that matter, has this camp been different in terms of the excitement and butterflies

MB- Definitely, this is the longest lay off I’ve had since I started fighting.  It just made me all the more hungrier to get back in there.  I think right now I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in.  I’m more motivated than I have ever been and I think my skills are the best they have been.  He better be the best he has ever been because I will be at my best

SD- Where did you train for this fight

MB- I trained in Seattle with Matt Hume

SD- Rich Franklin also works with Hume.  Talk about he has helped round out your game

MB- There is too much to go into to explain that.  He has really put it all together and made me an all around mixed-martial artist instead of just a fighter.  He puts everything together.  Instead of training Muay Thai then Jiu-Jitsu its more MMA.  Everything we do is MMA.  The way he teaches and puts everything together is the best in the business, bar none

SD- Thanks Matt and good luck at UFC 105

Roy Nelson, Justin Wren square off in TUF 10 Quarterfinals

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Weighing in at 250 pounds, Justin Wren, fighting out of Fort Worth, Texas, was labeled as the youth side of Youth versus Experience. The “experience” was his opponent tonight on Episode 9 of The Ultimate Fighter 10: Heavyweights, Roy “Big Country” Nelson. Nelson certainly had the weight advantage at 264 pounds and his MMA experience has been well-chronicled on the show, but UFC President Dana White sais he was impressed by Wren’s victory on the show and not Nelson’s.

The first TUF 10 Quarterfinal fight began at 10:42 pm ET, thus giving reason to believe that it would be a full-length fight. After two rounds it went to the judges’ scorecards with two 20-18 scores and a 19-19 score. The winner? Well you will have to check in on Thursday afternoon when we post our TUF 10 Roy Nelson vs Justin Wren recap.

MMA Update

11-10-2009

MMA Talent- UFC supporters often point out that the UFC is the premier MMA organization in the world and the talent everywhere else is inferior.  No doubt the UFC has the most talent top to bottom but they do not horde the talent say as the NFL, NBA or MLB does.  Each NFL teams roster has the best talent at every position that no other league can compete with.  MLB and the NBA are similar but there is talent overseas that can at least make a roster.  The same applies to MMA only at a greater level.  There are elite fighters in every weight class that are ranked in the top ten but do not compete in the UFC.  No doubt the UFC is the best but don’t close your eyes on the sport.  Widen your horizons by watching Strikeforce, Dream and Sengoku to name a few.

Strikeforce- The Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio Silva fight was a very good battle between two elite heavyweights.  Werdum, who when in great shape is one of the best, out pointed Silva and looked very good in doing so.  Werdum is clamoring for a shot against Fedor.  Gegard Mousasi defeated Sokoudjou in the 2nd round and is quickly becoming one of the best light heavyweights in the world.  Jake Shields defeated Jason Miller in a tough battle that was a boring affair with neither fighter doing any damage.  Shields needs to work on his stand up.  Shields is now the Middleweight Champion who may have his first defense against Cung Le providing Le defeats Scott Smith.  Fedor Emelianenko defeated Brett Rogers in impressive fashion knocking out him out in the 2nd round.  Rogers broke Fedor’s nose in the beginning of the fight but in typical Fedor fashion, he kept his composure and took care of Rogers.  Regardless of what UFC apologists, Dana White and media outlets state, Fedor is simply the greatest the sport has ever known and there is no close 2nd.  Hopefully this sets up Alistair Overeem vs. Fedor in the near future for the Stikeforce Heavyweight Title.

Complete Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers fight results

Bellator- The Bellator Fighting Championship has somewhat flown under the radar but is quickly becoming a force in the world of MMA.  In 2010, Bellator will be aired live on Fox Sports Net and replayed late night on NBC in addition to airings on Telemundo.  CEO Bjorn Rebney spoke about Bellator’s TV contract and his philosophy in an interview with ProFighting-Fans.

UFC- UFC 105 and UFC 106 are scheduled on back to back weekends which continues a busy month for MMA fans.  At UFC 105, fans get another chance to view a legend when Randy Couture drops down to 205 lbs to face Brandon Vera.  The event will air free on Spike TV.  The following weekend will feature Tito Ortiz, who will make his long awaited return to the UFC, vs. Forrest Griffin in a rematch.  In the 1st bout at UFC 59, Ortiz defeated Griffin via a controversial split decision.  Ortiz has been out of action since UFC 84 in May of 2008 and will have a lot to prove.  The same determination will apply to Griffin who looks not only to avenge the loss to Ortiz but bounce back from an embarrassing loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 101.  For previews of both events and live results visit www.profighting-fans.com

Boxing- The big Miguel Cotto vs. Manny Pacquiao bout is this weekend on PPV.  Our friends at Pro Boxing Fans have their Pacquiao vs Cotto predictions and will feature Pacquiao vs Cotto round by round results on Saturday night. To help prepare fans for the event read an interview with legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach.
