Strikeforce “Diaz vs. Noons II” Play-by-Play: Gesias Cavalcante (15-3-1, 1 NC) vs. Josh Thomson (17-3, 1 NC)

1st round – “Big” John McCarthy is the referee for this lightweight bout.  GZ comes in and stalks after Thomson but misses with his first flurry.  Thomson lands an inside leg kick and then GZ comes in and clinches against the fence.  GZ lands a knee to the body while the two are against the cage fence.  GZ is pressing Thomson against the cage fence, but Thomson breaks away and resets in the middle.  Thomson is dancing around making GZ miss.  Thomson lands a kick to the body of GZ and then gets clipped with a right hand.  Thomson drops and GZ gets a guillotine choke on Thomson and pulls it very tight.  Thomson is surviving and punching from  the top and gets his neck free.  The crowd erupts and Thomson responds with ground and pound flurries.  GZ controls Thomson’s arms and wont allow him to use his strikes.  GZ is working the rubber guard and now gets Thomson’s arm, but Thomson fights back and almost chokes GZ out with an arm triangle choke until the bell saves him.  (GZ 10-9)

2nd round – GZ is first and lands a straight right hand but then misses with a looping right hand.  GZ presses Thomson against the fence and Thomson resists and reverses position.  Thomson lands a couple of knees from the outside position, and after dancing around the fence for awhile, he lands a couple more.  GZ now reverses and gets a tight body lock but Thomson again fights back and reverses.  Thomson throws GZ to the ground and is on top.  Thomson jumps on GZ’s back and tries to loosen him up by hitting him from top position.  GZ turns over but only momentarily, Thomson again controls his opponents’ back.  Thomson maintains his dominant position but GZ flips over and Thomson lands in his half-guard.  Thomson is slowly working to pass GZ’s guard and looking for another arm triangle position.  GZ survives and gets out of that position but Thomson lands a hard right before the round ends.  (Thomson 10-9)

3rd round – They decide not to touch gloves for the final round and come out with intent.  GZ presses the action and initiates a clinch.  Thomson reverses position and is trying to trip GZ to the ground.  GZ defends and gets his own takedown.  He lands in a mount position but Thomson is controlling GZ’s neck from the bottom.  GZ is working the body punches while trying to keep his dominant position.  Thomson moves into a rubber guard position but GZ finds a way out.  GZ lands a couple of strikes from the top position before resetting on his feet again.  After circling around the cage, GZ lands a big right and Thomson lands on the ground again.  GZ presses Thomson against the fence and Thomson grabs hold of a guillotine attempt from the bottom position.  GZ is smothering Thomson and landing a couple of strikes as Thomson tries to catch him in a submission attempt.  (GZ 10-9)

Strikeforce “Diaz vs. Noons II” Play-by-Play: Marloes Coenen (17-4) vs. Sarah Kaufmann (12-0)

Women’s Welterweight Championship (135 lbs.)

1st round – The referee for this title bout is Dan Stell.  Coenen comes out and sets her feet in the center of the cage first.  Coenen hits with a low kick to the inside of Kaufmann’s thigh.  Coenen is keeping her hands up high and protecting her head well.  Kaufmann finally finds her target and hits Coenen with a right hand.  Coenen gets tagged with a combination of punches by Kaufmann so she clinches and pushes her against the cage fence.  Coenen and Kaufmann are now trading knees from the clinch intil the referee steps in and breaks them up.  Coenen popped Kaufmann with some strikes and then ta ngles up with a body clinch.  Coenen is now working  inside knees from the clinch until the referee breaks it up again.  Coenen hits with a body kick and then follows it with a low kick before landing an uppercut at the very end of the round.  (Coenen 10-9)

2nd round – The action is back on with Kaufmann hitting first with a right hand.  Kaufmann clinches with Coenen after getting tagged by a combination.  Kaufmann pushes Coenen against the fence after she initiates a body lock.  Kaufmann is working inside knees, as is Coenen.  They dance around the cage in the clinch for several moments until the referee resets them in the center.  They trade short right hands, but then Coenen connects with a loud body kick.  Kaufmann catches the body kick and presses Coenen against the cage fence, however Coenen is working knees from the clinch.  Kaufmann is taking more than she is giving out in the clinch, and the ref breaks them up again with less than a minute to go.  Coenen hits with a low leg kick, so Kaufmann catches the kick and puts Coenen on her back.  Before the round ends, Kaufmann stands up and strikes from top position.  She almost gets caught with an armbar but the bell ends any chance of that.  (Kaufmann 10-9)

3rd round – The action is back on and Kaufmann finds the center first, however she is quickly taken to the ground.  Kaufmann quickly reverses and finds top position.  Kaufmann powers out of Coenen’s guard and tries to posture up but Coenen does an adequate job on defense.  Kaufmann lands a couple of body punches but Coenen catches her arm and locks in the fight ending submission when Kaufmann taps out.

Strikeforce “Diaz vs. Noons II” Play-by-Play: Andre Galvao (5-1) vs. Tyron Woodley (7-0)

1st round – The referee for this welterweight bout will be Josh Rosenthal.  Galvoa is first to strike hitting with a straight left hand.  He then has to get out of the way of a hard right hand by Woodley.  Woodley next stuffs a takedown attempt by Galvao and then pops him with a left hand.  Galvao continues with his hands down and he gets hit with several uppercuts.  Galvao pushes forward trying for the takedown, but after getting tagged with another hard right, referee Rosenthal steps in and stops it.

Strikeforce Challengers 10 Showtime Play-by-Play: Joe Riggs vs. Louis Taylor

Main Event

1st round – This catchweight 182-pound bout is underway.  Taylor misses with a left hand but hits with a body kick.  Riggs misses with his head kick attempt, and moves back as Taylor misses with another low kick.  Riggs delivers a knee, but Taylor regains his composure and presses Riggs against the fence.  Riggs has under hooks, but gets taken to the ground and on his back.  Taylor is now working from Riggs guard.  Riggs is staying busy from his back hitting with strikes to the face of Taylor.  Taylor realizes he isnt comfortable and stands back up.  Riggs misses with a supermand punch and backs away watching out for Taylor’s power.  Riggs gets clipped with a right hand, and then misses with his own right hook.  Riggs finally lands a solid left hand that puts him on his heels.  Taylor misses with a left hand buit hits with a spinning back elbow.  Taylor clinches with Riggs and presses him against the fence.  His takedown attempt fails and the round ends.  (Taylor 10-9)

2nd round – A time out is called because Taylor forgot to put in his mouthpiece.  Riggs gets the action going first in the 2nd round with a nice low kick.  He hits with another low kick, and a third.  Riggs connects with a superman punch as well.  Taylor hits with his own kick and left hand followed by an uppercut.  Taylor hts with a body shot that has Riggs backpedling.  Riggs lands a solid left hand and then backs up as Taylor rushes in.  Taylor does land a nice combination right before he clinches and takes Riggs against the fence.  Riggs breaks free and blocks several Taylor punches.  Taylor shoots in for the takedown and gets it.  Taylor begins to work from side control.  He is trying to get into mount position, however isnt very active with offense.  Both fighters now begin to hit with some light body punches.  Riggs is working to control Taylor’s arms as time ends in the round.  (Taylor 10-9)

3rd round – Taylor comes forward in the final round and gets clipped with a Riggs kick.  Riggs lands a left hand that stumbles Taylor.  Riggs rushes in and gets Taylor to the ground where he begins to hammer down with ground strikes.  Taylor still looks to be hurt as he taps out after being put in a crucifix position.

Strikeforce Challengers 10 Showtime Play-by-Play: Hitomi Akano vs. Miesha Tate (10-2)

Strikeforce  Women’s 115-pound  Tournament Final

1st round – The action is underway, as Akano lands asolid kick to the body of Tate.  Tate shakes the jab in Akano’s face, who answers with another body kick.  Tate presses Akano against the cage, but Akano uses her Judo and trips Tate to the floor.  Akano gets one of Tate’s arms, but cant convert as she rolls out.  Akano moves her attention to Tate’s legs, but she defends that as well.  Tate gets back to her feet just as the bell sounds.  (Akano 10-9)

2nd round – Both fighters come out mixing it up in the first few seconds.  Tate hits Akano a couple of times with nice kicks.  After clinching, Tate decides to take the action to the floor.  Akano lands on her back but also on the stomach of Tate.  Akano grabs one of Tate’s arms and immediatley goes to work on it.  Tate spends all of her time defending against the arm.  Tate does get her arm back and takes the back of Akano.  Tate begins to pound away on the head of Akano.  Akano squirms free and reverses her position within the final ten seconds of the round.  (Tate 10-9)

3rd round – The final round is on and Akano lands the first kick.  Tate answers with a kick of her own, but as they hit the floor, Tate takes the back of Akano.  Tate is trying to get her arm under the chin of Akano, but Akano is defending for the moment.  Tate continues to slide the arm under the chin, but Akano continues to defend well.  Tate rolls over and takes the back of Akano, where she starts to hammer away on her head.  Akano rolls out of danger, but Tate remains in control by taking the back again.  As she regains control, she begins to wail down on her head with numerous ground punches as the bell ends the fight.  (Tate 10-9)

Strikeforce Challengers 10 Showtime Play-by-Play: Colleen Schneider vs. Liz Carmouche (3-0)

Strikeforce Womens 115-pound reserve bout

1st round – The bout is underway and Carmouche presses Schneider against the fence.  Schneider defends and lands a knee to the body of Carmouche.  Carmouche stays on Schneider and begins to land strikes to the head.  Carmouche finally works the fight to the ground, but Schneider quickly makes it back to her feet.  Schneider is now the aggressor on her feet, but she then is flipped on her back on the ground.  Carmouche is landing several shots from Schneider’s guard.  Schneider stays busy from the bottom but Carmouche controls most of the action from top position.  (Carmouche 10-9)

2nd round- Carmouche comes out in a hurry again, but Schneider defneds and pushes away.  Schneider presses Carmouche against the fence now and tries to trip her to the ground.  The ref steps in and breaks the action, resetting it in the center.  Carmouche comes out and rushes back in Schneider’s face.  Scheider works the fight to the ground, but it looks to be too little too late as time runs out before she can get anything going offensively.  (Carmouche 10-9)

Strikeforce Challengers 10 Showtime Play-by-Play: Lucas Stark (0-0) vs. Ryan Couture (0-0)

1st round – The referee for this lightweight bout is Ron Mation.  After a touch of gloves, this bout is on.  Stark comes out with a couple of kick attempts, but misses, as does Couture with his jabs.  A clinch is initiated by Couture, and he takes the action to the floor.  Stark defends well and rolls into top position, however Couture slaps on  a triangle choke and forces a tap out for the victory.

Strikeforce Challengers 10 Showtime Play-by-Play: Hitomi Akano vs. Carina Damm

1st round – The action gets underway with both fighters trading kicks.  Damm takes the fight to the ground, where both quickly grapple for position.  Damm lands on top and in Akano’s guard, and goes to work with some ground and pound strikes.  Akano continues to work from her back and almost breaks free.  Damm catches her and puts her back on her back, but for some reason the referee steps in and stands it back up.  From the standing position, Akano gets the fight to the ground with a headlock, but just as she gets solid position, the round ends.  (Damm 10-9)

2nd round – The final round is underway as Akano presses Damm against the cage fence.  Akano twists Damm around and throws her to the ground and on her back.  Akano is on top, and barely in Damm’s guard.  She breaks free, but Damm quickly regains her composure and gets on top.  Both fighters scramble for position, and out of nowhere, Akano falls into mount and gets a triangle choke submission forcing Damm to tap out.

Strikeforce/M-1 “Fedor vs. Werdum” Showtime Play-by-Play: Fabricio Werdum () vs. Fedor Emeilianenko ()

1st round – Fedor, like always, lands a hard combination and connects several times on Werdum’s face.  Werdum crahses to the ground and Fedor follows him.  Fedor pounds on Werdum’s body and face, but Werdum gets a triangle choke set-up.  From the ground, Fedor leaves his out and Fabricio converts his submission.  Werdum locks in a triangle choke submission and finishes the “The Last Emporer”.

Strikeforce/M-1 “Fedor vs. Werdum” Play-by-Play: Cung Le (6-1) vs. Scott Smith (18-6, 1 NC)

1st round – Smith chases after Le and hits him with a right hand.  He presses Le against the fence and gets underhooks in.  Le hits Smith with a couple of knees, however, Smith lands some uppercuts to the body of Le.  They seperate and Smith chases Le around the cage.  Le hits Smith with a straight right and a kick.  Le hits Smith with a leg kick and puts a combination into Smith’s face.  Smith keeps coming forward and hits Smith with a straight left.  Smith dives in for the takedown, but Le doesnt allow it.  Le catches the attempt and goes for the body of Smith.  Smith makes it to his feet, but Le wont allow him to get up any farther.  Smith drives Le into the fence and makes it to his feet the entire way.  Smith hits with some punches inside to Le’s body.  Le hits Smith with a high head kick and then comes in and adds a couple of knees that put Smith to the ground.  Le jumps on his back and begins to punch his body.  Smith isnt doing much and takes some more punches to the body.  Le is on top when the bell ends the round.  (Le 10-9)

2nd round – Le lands two right hands to begin the round.  Smith comes in and takes a high kick to the head.  Le hits Smith with a spinning heel kick.  Le begins to hammer away on Smith’s body.  Smith stands up and gets wrist control.  Le breaks away, and hits with a straight right hand.  Le hits with a spinning back kick and puts Smith on his face.  Smith sprints in and finishes the job with some strikes to Smith’s head and body.
