Aldo vs. Faber Live Play-by-Play: Jose Aldo (16-1) vs. Urijah Faber (23-3)

Featherweight Title Bout

1st round – Josh Rosenthal is the referee for this featherweight title bout.  Faber misses with a push kick to start it off.  Faber runs at Aldo but misses with a couple rights.  Aldo kicks Faber and then jumps backwards.  Aldo trips up Faber but Faber connects with a push kick as well.  Faber switches stances and misses with a right hand.  Faber rushes in and misses with his first takedown attempt.  Faber hit with a light right hand.  Aldo gets clipped with a right hook.  Aldo misses with an uppercut and then again with a left.  He does connect with a knee up the middle.  Faber takes a deep breath and then throws a right hand, which missed.  Faber rushes in and hits with a combo.  Aldo lands a knee to the body.  Faber gets seperation with a push front kick.  Aldo hits with a spinning back kick as the round ends.

2nd round – The 2nd round is underway and Faber just misses with a couple of right hands.  Aldo trips up Faber and then hits with a right hand to the body of Faber.  Faber leads in with a right hand but misses with most of it.  Aldo missed with an uppercut but hit with a second one.  Aldo lands a leg kick to the thigh of Faber.  Faber rushes in and misses with a kick.  Aldo hits with a leg kick again.  Aldo is picking Faber apart with his kicks and he lands another one.  Faber shoots but pulls back and squares up again.  A front kick by Faber barely makes contact.  Aldo almost drops Faber with a low kick.  Faber hits with a right hand after getting hit with a low leg kick again.  Aldo hits with a solid leg kick to the body as the 2nd round bell sounds.

3rd round – Faber makes Aldo miss and fakes a shoot.  Aldo hits with a solid right hand to the body.  He then shakes off a takedown attempt by Faber.  Aldo hits with another leg kick and seems to hae hurt Faber.  Faber hits with a left.  Alfo hits with a body shot and Faber is hurting.  Faber barely hits with a left hand.  Aldo connects with a let and then goes down with Faber but gets right back up.  He delivers anotehr kcik and then tees off with right hand to the body.  Faber fights back and hits with a right hand to stop Aldo’s flurry.  Aldo hits with a trip and then a right hand.  Faber charges in on Aldo but then retreats.  Aldo connects with a low leg kick.  Aldo lands a left to the body and then drops Faber as the 3rd round bell saves him.

4th round – Aldo lands another body kick as the 4th starts.  Aldo hits with a low leg kick that has Faber jumping on one leg.  The fight is on the ground now after a flurry by Aldo.  Aldo mounts and gets his arms around Aldo’s body.  Aldo peppers Faber with a couple of punches to the head.  Faber is scrambling but cant get out of Aldo’s grasp.  He finally does and gets back to his feet.  Faber misses with a left jab.  Aldo trips Faber up again and then joins him on the ground.  Aldo is on top of Faber and trying to transition.  He is in side control and trying to mount.  He begins to hammer on Faber’s head with shots.  Faber almost is finished but pops up for a moment.  The ref is looking carefully, but lets the action go on.  Aldo lands elbow after elbow as Faber bucks up.  Aldo connects with punch after punch as Faber bucks out once again.  Faber scrambles and Aldo continues to hammer away with punches as the round ends.

5th round – The final round is underway and Aldo looks fresh.  Faber rushes in but Aldo escapes.  A right by Faber is blocked and so is another right.  Faber jumps at Aldo’s feet but Aldo chooses to allow him to his feet.  Faber gets up and takes a right from Aldo.  Aldo comes in at Faber and then back away.  Faber hits with a right hand and then misses with a takedown.  Aldo hits with a leg kick to the body of Faber.  Faber rushes away from Aldo and then squares off again.  He goes in for a takedown and gets clipped with a body shot.  Faber hits with a right jab and then jumps at Aldo’s feet.  Aldo hits with a left hand from the top position.  Aldo stands on top of Faber and hits with a right hand.  Faber tries an upkick as the bell sounds to end the fight.

Lightweight Title Bout

1st round – This co-main event bout is refereed by Herb Dean.  Henderson hits with a low leg kick.  He then misses with a combo but is taken to the ground.  They are both back up to their feet now and locked near the octagon fence.  Henderson has a body lock on Cerrone and he begins to tag him with knees to the legs.  Henderson falls on top of Cerrone and grabs his neck making him tap out after just a short scramble.

Aldo vs. Faber Live Play-by-Play: Manvel Gamburyan (12-5) vs. Mike Brown (23-5)

1st round – Jon Schorle is the ref for this featherweight bout.  Brown missed with a heavy right hand.  Brown hits with a front kick and then has his right hand blocked.  Another Brown right misses but a jab doesnt.  Manny just missed with a left hook.  Manny paces in at Brown but quickly retreats.  Brown hits with a right hook and then misses with a right hab.  Manny surprises Brown with a short right hand.  Brown crumbles to the ground and is tagged with about six more punches from the top before the referee stops it.

OFFICIAL DECISION – Gamburyan over Brown 1st round KO (2:22)

Aldo vs. Faber Live Play-by-Play: Anthony Njokuani (13-2) vs. Shane Roller (7-2)

1st round – Josh Rosenthal is the ref for this lightweight bout.  Njokuani shuffles around the cage as Roller grabs his waist and tries to put him to the ground.  Njokuani goes down but gets right back up to his feet.  Roller finally gets him on the ground.  Njokuani is on his back and Roller moves into half guard.  Roller mounts and grabs Njokuani’s neck.  Roller gets back on his back and puts an arm around his neck.  Njokuani turns his head away and survives for the moment.  Roller continues to control Njokuani’s back.  Njokuani continues to move and transtion from position to position.  Roller has an arm underneath Njokuani’s neck and squeezes.  Njokuani cant scramble anymore and has to tap out.

Aldo vs. Faber Live Play-by-Play:Antonio Banuelos (18-5) vs. Scott Jorgensen (9-3)

1st round – Herb Dean gets them going and Banuelos hits with a left hook first.  He connects again and then stuffs a takedown from Jorgensen.  Jorgensen hits with a knee to the body.  Banuelos breaks away and hits with another left hook.  Jorgensen hits with a right and it is answered with an inside leg kick by Banuelos.  Banuelos hit Jorgensen with a combo and Jorgensen answers with a low blow.  The action barely stops and Banuelos drops Jorgensen with a left hand.  He immediatley jumps in Jorgensen’s guard and starts to work on his body.  Jorgensen went right for the arm bar and then escaped to his feet.  Back in a clinch, Banuelos hits with a knee up the middle.  Jorgensen hits with a left jab and then a leg kick.  They trade right hands and then tie up once again.  Banuelos hits with a leg kick and another before the end of the round.

2nd round – Jorgensen starts this round out by pressuring Banuelos.  Banuelos is on the retreat as Jorgensen stays in his face.  Banuelos finally finds a home for a right hand.  Jorgensen hits with a kick to the body and then a right hook.  Jorgensen hits with a short left hand that bloodies Banuelos’ nose.  Banuelos gets a body kick in on Jorgensen, who answers with a left hand.  Banuelos hit with a low leg kick but Jorgensen hits a couple of left jabs to Banuelos’s face.  Banuelos, again, hits with a leg kick.  Jorgensen catches Banuelos again and put him on alert.  Banuelos stays in front now and is dropped with a hard right.  Jorgensen jumps on top of his opponent and takes his back.  Jorgensen concentrates on his ground and pound game.  Banuelos is surviving as he tries to get up.  His nose is bleeding even more now, but he gets to his feet and throws a head kick as the round ends.

3rd round – The final round is underway as Jorgensen hits with a right jab.  Banuelos misses with a heavy right and gets clipped with a right hand by Jorgensen.  Banuelos catches a leg kick by Jorgensen and throws it to the side.  Banuelos hits with a leg kick and is tagged with a right hook.  Banuelos hangs in and hits with a right and then a left hook.  Jorgensen stalks after him and clips Banuelos with a left.  He adds a right hook and another.  Banuelos hangs in but cant find much in the way of offense.  Jorgensen catches Banuelos with a right hand and then drops him with a straight right.  Banuelos hits with an elbow as he goes back to the ground.  Jorgensen gets Banuelos’ back and has the choke in, but Banuelos gets out.  Jorgensen stays on top and hits with several shots to the head.  Banuelos is trying to get to his feet but Jorgensen is stuck to his back.  Jorgensen hits with shots to the head as Bauelos turtles up.  Jorgensen gets an arm under his chin again, but Banuelos is still swinging and gets out.  He throws one last punch as the bell ends the round.

WEC 47 Weigh In Results

No surprises to note from the WEC 47 Weigh Ins which took place on March 5 @ the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio. With a main card featuring the bantamweight championship fight and top contender’s bout as well as the return of MMA legend Jens Pulver, WEC 47 is sure to be a fan favorite.

WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles weighed in at 134.5 pounds for his first title defense while his opponent Dominick Cruz came in at 134 lbs. Former bantamweight champ Miguel Angel Torres, coming off his first loss in years after Bowles scored a KO back in at WEC 42, returns to the Octagon to face Joseph Benavidez. Torres weighed in at 134.5 pounds with Benavidez tipping the scales at 135 pounds. Jens Pulver came in at 145.5 lbs and will look to avoid his 5th straight loss as he faces Javier Vasquez who weighed in on the dot at 145 pounds. L.C. Davis and Deividas Taurosevicius had no problem making weight and neither did the battle of long names and vowels between Karen Darabedyan and Bart Palaszewski.

WEC 46 Results: Preliminary Fights Complete

Live from Sacramento, California, WEC 46 is currently underway. If you are not interested in knowing the WEC 46 results from the non-televised preliminary fights, don’t read on. However, if you are interested in the preliminary WEC 46 results read on or click the link above.

As I said before, the WEC 46 undercard bouts are complete and 5 of the 6 fights went the distance resulting in judges’ decisions. The lone early stoppage was a 1st round submission victory by Mark Hominick over Bryan Caraway by armbar. In the 5 decision victories, all but on were unanimous decisions, Will Campuzano defeated Coty Wheeler, Eddie Wineland defeated George Roop, Wagnney Fabiano defeated Clint Godfrey, Charlie Valencia defeated Akitoshi Tamura in the lone split decision and Deividas Taurosevicius defeated Mackens Semerzier.

Of course for those of you fortunate enough to have the Versus network, WEC 46 is currently airing live right now after beginning at 9 pm ET. Coming up is former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown facing Anthony Morrison, Dave Jansen vs Kamal Shalorus in a battle of undefeated fighters, former Featherweight Champion and WEC posterboy Urijah Faber facing Raphael Assuncao and WEC Lightweight Champion Jaime Varner vs Interim Champion Benson Henderson. LC Davis vs. Javier Vasquez

Both Afflictions holdovers prove that they are tough and hard to finish fighters. LC Davis squeaks out a razor thin split decision.

Rafael Dias vs. Diego Nunes

Dias waited too long to put up a fight. Nunes outworked him for the entire fight.

Rani Yahya vs. John Hosman

Yahya defended an early submission attempt, reversed position, and locked in a north-south choke submission for the win, knocking off the debuting Hosman.

Ratcliff jumps on Cardella early, scoring points with solid striking.

Fredson Paixao vs. Cole Province

Paixao attempted a couple submission attempts but was unable to finish Province.  Province was the better of the two in the early stand up game.  Paixao fights back in the second round and scores with leg kicks and knees, opening a wound on Province’s face, which is bleeding bad!  The bleeding didnt fool the judges, who awarded the decision in Province’s favor.

Main Card LIVE on Versus is beginning-

Leonard Garcia (16-4) vs. Jamel Massouh (21-5) - Featherweight Bout

ROUND 1- After Mazzagatti “Hooks em up”, neither fighter is connecting early.Massouh lands low leg kick then takes a right hand by Garcia.  They trade strikes in the middle of the cage, until Garcia drops him with a hard right hand.  Garcia follows it up with bombs from the top.  They get back to their feet.  Massouh fights back to connect on a right hand of his own.  They clinch with 1:40 remaining in the round.  Massouh takes Garcia to the ground and jumps on top position.  Massouh working for mount, lands a couple of elbows and hammer fists while on top.  Garcia back in full guard.  Massouh finishes the round with three unanswered strikes from the top.  Tough round to score but Ill go with Massouh 10-9.

ROUND 2- They both take the center of the cage and Massouh lands first with a low leg kick.  Garcia gets the takedown, tries for the guillotine but Massouh escapes.  Massouh now inside the guard, is landing elbows from side control.  Massouh continues to hold dominant position, trying to convert the darce choke.  Garcia gets back up but still in the choke.  Garcia goes limp but survives, barely, and retreats to give him more time to recover.  Massouh lands leg kicks while Garcia is breathing heavy and not doing much on offense.  Massouh pushes Garcia up against the cage, lands small body shots when the 2nd round bell sounds.  Massouh breaks away in that round, Massouh 10-9.

ROUND 3-Garcia hits on a high kick, followed up with a right hook.  Massouh lands a left body kick, followed up with a low leg kick.  Garcia just missing with his hard right.  Massouh misses a superman punch, clinches then breaks away.  Garcia hits with a right, and just missed with a left hook.  Garcia really throwing haymakers but hits with a leg kick to the body of Massouh.  Massouh hits with a jab, countered with a left hook from Garcia.  Garcia just missed again with a right hand.  Massouh gets Garcia in a body lock, gets hit with a knee to the body from Garcia.  Massouh seems to be passive in this round.  Garcia hits with a couple lefts, followed with a nice combo.  With 20 seconds, they both trade strikes.  Massouh finishes with a jab and low leg kick.  Garcia gets the last round from me 10-9.

Takeya Mizugaki (11-3-2) vs. Jeff Curran (29-11-1) - Bantamweight Bout

ROUND 1-They both connect on low kicks to start the bout.  Curran catches a leg kick but has trouble converting the takedown.  Curran still trying to get the takedown after almost a full minute.  Curran still has a single leg attempt with both fighters on their knees.  Mizugaki landing little punches to the body while defending on the takedown.  They both get back to their feet until Mizugake throws Curran to the ground.  Curran in full guard, while Mizugake lands several right hands.  Curran misses on an armbar.  They both get back to feet only for seconds, as they find themselves on the mat.  The round ends with Mizugaki on top.  Close round to score, Ill go with Curran 10-9.

ROUND 2-Curran hits on a right hand.  Mizugaki answers with a low kick.  Both continue to trade strikes on their feet.  Mizugake hits on a hard right, but doesnt seem to hurt Curran.  Mizugaki clinches with Curran and pushes him up against the cage.  Curran, still in the clinch, hits with small knees.  Mizugaki surprises Curran with a toss to the mat.  Mizugaki in Curran’s full guard, drops elbows and shoulder strikes from top position.  Curran trying to get out from bottom position.  Mizugaki continues to stay active, hitting elbows and punches.  Curran has a guillotine with about 40 seconds remaining.  Mizugaki hanging on by tying to hold Curran’s hands.  Mizugaki survives the round with help from the bell.  Ill give this round to Curran, 10-9.

ROUND 3-  Both try to end it with a heavy punch.  Curran misses on a takedown attempt, only to fall into a clinch with Mizugaki.  They go to the ground with Mizugaki on top.  Curran continues to attempt submissions, while Mizugaki stays busy with strikes.  Mizugaki, in Curran’s full guard, hanging on while Curran lands elbows from his back.  Mizugaki hits on some elbows to Curran’s face.  Mizugaki is now smothering Curran, lasts momentarily as Curran gets out and continues to stay busy from bottom.  Mizugaki is in Curran’s half guard, hits with hammer fist.  Curran reverses with a kimura sweep into a triangle choke.  Curran trying desperatly to finish, Mizugaki survives but Curran dominates the remaining minute.  No doubt for me, Curran 10-9.  My scoring gives a unanimous decision 30-27 for Curran.

Ricardo Lamas (6-0) vs. Danny Castillo (7-1) - Lightweight Bout

ROUND 1- Herb Dean gets them going.  Castillo looks good with his stand up, connecting on some nice combinations.  After Castillo rushes, they clinch then break again.  Nice exchanges between both fighters.  Castillo lands heavy rights, Lamas tries to clinch, but gets thrown off.  Lamas tries a head kick, misses and backs up again.  Castillo leads with a left jab, then follows up with a nice low leg kick.  Lamas connects with a body kick.  Castillo lands a heavy combination that put Lamas on is heels.  Lamas comes back with a nice left of his own, before they both fall into a clinch.  Castillo is “bullying” The Bully on the cage.  Lamas continues to hit on the low leg kicks.  Castillo fakes a right hand and gets hit with a left jab from Lamas.  Another close round but Ill go with Lamas, who seemed to land more.  Lamas 10-9

ROUND 2-Castillo misses on a combination.  Lamas misses on a front kick but hits Castillo with a combo as he rushes in.  Lamas hits on a head kick, but gets answered with a right hand to the body from Castillo.  Lamas continues to hit the low kick.  Castillo misses on a takedown.  Lamas hits a nice combination, finishing it with another head kick.  Lamas picking Castillo apart with leg kicks.  Castillo connects with a body shot, but doesnt seem to hurt Lamas.  Lamas sticks his jab in Castillo’s face again.  Castillo hits on a right hand, but answered with a body kick from Lamas.  Castillo hurts Lamas with a  straight right hand, jumps on top of him and drops several unanswered punches from top.  Lamas couldnt recover in time, as referee Herb Dean rushes in and saves him.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Dominick Cruz – Bantamweight Bout

ROUND 1-The action gets going with both fighters hitting with kicks and punches.  Banavidez misses with his right hand, hits seconds later with a combo.  Cruz drops Benavidez but doesnt jump on him, instead stays calm and allows him to rise back up.  Cruz takes Benavidez down to the mat, where he is in top position.  Benavidez fails on a guiilotine as they rise to their feet.  Cruz attempts to set up a combination but fakes instead.  Benavidez hits on a low leg kick.  Cruz working his jabs.  Cruz uses his strength to take Benavidez down, only for seconds as they get back up.  Cruz pins him to the cage, drops him to the mat but cant  finish.  They both get back to their feet, and Benavidez reverses into an offensive position, clinching Cruz against the cage.  A furious pace to the 1st round, Im giving it to Cruz 10-9.

ROUND 2-Benavidez counters a right hand by Cruz with a head kick.  Cruz misses on a wild combination.  Benavidez is more accurate with leg kicks.  Cruz is dominating with punches, connecting on three to the face of Benavidez.  Benavidez looked to be stunned for a second but recovers and takes the center of the cage.  Benavidez fakes a takedown and gets hit with a head kick.  Cruz stuns Benavidez while backing up, clipping with a right hand.  Cruz takes Benavidez down again but allows him to get back to his feet only seconds later.  Benavidez got caught with a right hook, then grabs onto a single leg to recover.  Cruz pushes Benavidez away and misses on a wild right hand.  Cruz hitting more frequently with his strikes.  Benavidez misses on an uppercut and front kick.  Cruz pushing the pace, as Benavidez misses on a spinning back elbow.  Cruz takes Benavidez down with 15 seconds remaining to complete another dominating round, 10-9 Cruz.

ROUND 3-Benavidez misses on a head kick and front kick attempt.  Cruz puts a jab in Benavidez face.  Benavidez telegraphing his punches, missing wildly twice.  Cruz catches with a right hook.  Cruz kicks leg out of under Benavidez and converts another takedown.  Cruz in side mount, only for seconds, as Benavidez powers his way back up.  Cruz stalking Benavidez, and missing with a heavy combination.  They both are missing with strikes  until Benavidez hits a heac kick.  Cruz takes down Benavidez for the second time in the round, but cant hold him there and they get back up.  Cruz drops Benavidez again, takes his back and dropping several punches to the side of Benavidez head.  Cruz wins on my score card with a dominate 30-27 score.

Miguel Torres (36-1) vs. Brian Bowles (7-0) – Bantamweight Championship Bout

ROUND 1-The Bantamweight World Title is underway as the feeling out process takes longer than usual for a Torres bout.  Torres hits on back to back low kicks.  Bowles rocks Torres, but he fights back and connects with a right of his own.  They clinch and Bowles falls on top of Torres on the mat.  Torres using punches and heel strikes from the bottom to stay busy.  Torres hits on upkicks to Bowles’ face.  Bowles jumps back into Torres guard, only to get back up to his feet.  Torres jumps back to his feet.  Bowles connects on a right left combo.  Torres just misses on a head kicks, and hits Bowles with three hooks.  Bowles hangs tough and drops Torres with right hook, followed with a left hand while Torres was on his back, knocking him out cold.  Referee Josh Rosenthal saves Torres from anymore damage.  Bowles shocks the WEC with a devastating stoppage win.

WEC 42 is set to get underway this evening in Las Vegas, and ProFighting-fans.com, the MMA branch of DFN Sports, will be covering the entire event with updates throughout the night.
