Billy Vaughan vs. Ryan Lang

August 28th, 2010

In a battle of Ohio wrestling superstars, we should see some excellent grappling.  Lang is a four-time OHSAA state champion out of St. Edward’s High School in nearby Lakewood. Vaughan was a state runner up, so this should be a test of who has evolved other skills.

Lang looks for a quick shot and works the inside trips  to no avail. Vaughan is demonstrating some excellent takedown defense and Lang is throwing everything he has at Vaughan. Vaughan finds a guillotine in a scramble and snatches it. Vaughan locks in the choke and ends the fight in the first round. Billy Vaughan wins by first round submission (Guillotine Choke).

in his post-fight interview, Vaughan says he is dropping to 135 lbs and wants to be the best in the world. Best of luck to Billy.

Brandon Inskeep vs. Doug Kulbis

August 28th, 2010

Between fights, Dan Hornbuckle is interviewed and he talks about his time in Bellator. Hornbuckle talks about his 7 hour drive and mentions that he will be once again fighting in a Bellator tournament for another shot at the belt. Hornbuckle is switching gears and will call the action from this next fight from the announcer’s table.

Kulbis fights for Evolve MMA and is brought out to the cage by his entire team, which includes a winner from earlier tonight, Bhrandon Poindexter.  Kulbis is the 2009 Amateur Featherweight Champion for the NAAFS. Kulbis takes a southpaw stance and Inskeep shoots. Kulbis maneuvers around and takes back control. Kulbis is landing lots of shots to the ribs of Inskeep. Inskeep regains full guard. Kulbis scrambles and locks in a triangle choke as time expires, too little too late. Kulbis seemed to focus on the ribs of Inskeep. 10-9 Kulbis.

Round 2. Spinning backfist by Inskeep. Kulbis takes it to the ground, gains backmount and locks in a rear naked choke. It is just a matter of time. Kulbis wins by 2nd round rear naked choke.

Niko Boscarino vs. Kevin Zalac

August 28th, 2010

This fight is the first pro bout of the evening. Kevin Zalac is the reigning NAAFS Amateur Middleweight Champion.  This liveblog is brought to you by Intimidation Clothing. Check out what they have to offer at www.IntimidationClothing.com and the newly launched www.IntimidationMMA.com. After you go to  those sites, make sure you come back to www.profighting-fans.com for the latest news in mixed martial arts.

Boscarino looks to tap gloves and throws a punch. Boscarino looks for a takedown and Zalac momentarily goes to guard before standing back up. Boscarino throws some nasty knees and is hammering away at Zalac’s face and midsection. Zalac is turning away from Boscarino. Boscarino lifts to slam and Zalac rolls with the slam and ends up in side mount on top of Boscarino. Nice veteran move by Zalac. Zalac works for an armbar and gets lifted and slammed for his troubles. Zalac is a crafty grappler and takes Boscarino’s back. Zalac with punch and he opens up Boscarino’s neck. Bocarino is flat and is taking lots of punches and elbows. Boscarino taps? Boscarino taps. At the point wwhen Boscarino tapped out, Zalac was postured up and was not throwing strikes at all. Strange. Both fighters look gassed. Zalac moves to 9-0-1 after the tapout victory.

Chase Owens vs. Zac Gobel

August 28th, 2010

This is probably a matchup of the 2 best nicknames I have ever heard. Chase “Why You Do Em Like That” Owens vs. Zac “Bad News at 11″ Gobel. Really guys. Great work on the nicknames. Gobel’s bad news just may be his bright pink trunks. Both fighters are in great shape and are very lean. Gobel is ranked #2 in the NAAFS Amateur Middleweight Division.

Gobel with a quick shot and there is a nice scramble. Owens takes the top and moves to backmount position with 2 hooks in. Gobel is trying to come out the backdoor and sweeps to the top. Owens uses the cage to sweep and is in the halfguard of Gobel. Gobel is digging for a leglock and time expires. Tough round to score, but I will give it to Owens

Round 2. Gobel takes a shot and moves to backmount. Gobel is high and Owens pulls him off. Owens is now on top in half guard. Owens in full mount. Owens is looking for rear naked choke. Not much going on here. Round 2 ends. Another round for Owens 10-9.

Gobel shoots and can’t do much on the ground.  Owens is to his feet and Gobel again takes him down. This time, Goebel moves to half-guard. Gobel looks for a guillotine and loses position. In a scramble, Owens takes Gobel’s back and Owens is content to punch  and knee from behind. Ref stands thefight up. Nice flurry at the end and this one is going to the judges.

The judges have this one for Owens by Unanimous Decision.

John Reed vs. Jeff Hughes

August 28th, 2010

another light heavyweight bout. Hughes is ranked #1 in the NAAFS amateur light heavyweight division. He has pro series champ AJ Aechliman in his corner.

Hughes is peppering Reed with jabs and heavy leg kicks. Reed is taking damage to his thighs and is switching stances to protect. Hughes looks cool in the cage and it could just be a matter of time before he has his way. 10-9 Hughes.

Hughes clinches and throws some solid knees to the body. Hughes outside trips and takes Reed’s back. Reed tries to escape and Hughes takes half guard position. Hughes is patient and punishing Reed. 10- 9Hughes, maybe 10-8.

Hughes back to the leg kicks in round 3.  Lots of clinch work and Hughes gets another outside trip.  Hughes is looking for full mount.  Scramble and Reed is eating shots. Hughes stands up and drops a superman punch as time expires and the ref jumps in. All 3 judges had the fight as 30-27 for Jeff Hughes. Nice fight.

Joe Goyette vs Andrew Jordan

August 28th, 2010

Goyette fights for Team Air-Gadfly, a team that is well-represented in the NAAFS. I am told Goyette has a 7 second knockout, which is an NAAFS record.  Jordan is undefeated at 4-0. Jordan hails from nearby Bay Village, Ohio and has the loudest welcome of the night thus far.

Goyette throws heavy hands and Jordan is momentarily wobbled. Jordan shoots a low single, takes the leg and runs the pipe for a takedown. Jordan goes to the guard of Goyette. There is a questionable stand-up by the ref as both fighters seem to be jockeying for control. Goyette throws a heavy right hand . Jordan and Goyeteet throw some  wild punches as round 1 ends. In a close round, I will score this one to Jordan 10-9.

Goyette takes a shot and can’t maintain control on the ground. Both fighters are throwing crisp strikes. Jordan is split open above his left eye. lots of wild strikes. Jordan is really bleeding now. Jordan shoots for a takedown and Goyette sprawls. Round 2 ends. Goyette 10-9. Round 3 will decide it.

Jordan shoots for a takedown and Goyette shows some serious takedown defense. Both fighters are showing serious wrestling chops Jordan shoots wildly and momentarily gives up his back. Back to the feet. Jordan pumps a few slick jabs to the eye of Goyette. Both fighters look gassed and just tie up for an extended period. Short time and Jordan misses a takedown. This one is going to the scorecards.

Winner by split decision Joe Goyette.

Manuel Villenueva vs. Bhrandon Poindexter

August 28th, 2010

Between fights, UFC veteran Matt “The Immortal” Brown is interviewed by NAAFS staff. Brown promises a big fight toward the end of 2010 and says he can’t reveal all of the details. Brown also mentioned that his girlfriend is due to have twin boys in October. Matt mentions he hopes to have 2 world champions in 20-25 years. Best of luck to Matt and his girlfriend! Keep an eye on profighting-fans.com in the coming days as we will be posting an interview with NAAFS Radio and Matt.

This is a catchweight bout (150 lbs).

Lots of clinchwork. Both fighters throw some solid body knees. Villenueva look like he would rather take the fight to the ground. Poindexter just misses on a spinning backkick. Poindexter is getting in some nice shots on the feet and for some reason looks to take a shot. Villenueva sprawls, locks up a guillotine, and pulls guard. BP pulls out and the round ends. Poindexter 10-9.

Round 2 and there is a low blow by Villenueva. Villenueva throws a looping right and Poindexter takes the opportunity to shoot for a takedown.  Villenueva looks to lock up a kimura and Poindexter slips free. Back to the feet. Poindexter in on another shot and Villenueva is looking for an armbar or triangle.  Frenzied punching and round 2 ends. Another one for Poindexter. 10-9 poindexter.

Poindexter throws a two punch combo, wobbles Villenueva who shoots to avoid more abuse. Poindexter moves to backmount and finishes the fight by rear naked choke.

Tony Dipiero vs. Jason Butcher

August 28th, 2010

The next bout is in the amateur light heavyweight division. Dipiero comes to the cage with a cleanly shaven head and a full beard; this is an interesting look to say the least. Dipiero is introduced as fighting out of Cleveland and he gets a warm welcome.

Dipiero eats some punches and shoots and scores a takedown.  Butcher has good hip and gets to his feet. Butcher sinks in a slick anaconda choke and Dipiero taps quickly. Jason Butcher wins by first round submission. :51 seconds. Not bad.

Kyle Dunn vs. Chris Moore 155lbs. Amateur fight

August 28th, 2010

Here we go from the 4th annual NAAFS Rock n Rumble in the Flats of Cleveland, Ohio. Kyle Dunn comes to the cage first and is easily the front-runner for worst hair of the evening. His hair is short, but buzzed to the scalp in a sort of spiderweb pattern, ala Kendall Grove. Moore fights out of nearby Chardon, Ohio and gets a warm welcome. Both fighters are making their MMA debut. Let’s see what they’ve got.

The bout starts with a bevy of leg kicks and wild looping punches. Neither fighter looks especially comfortable in the cage.  Dunn scores a takedown and takes sidecontrol. Dunn moves to mount and rains punches until Moore ties up Dunns arms with his legs.  Not much action and the ref stands the fighters up. Dunn gets comfortable and lands some crisp punches to end the round.  Dunn takes the round 10-9 in my book.

More leg kicks from each fighter. Dunn floors Moore with a nice right hand and moves to mount. Moore goes to his side and eventually belly. Dunn rains down punches and the ref steps in. Kyle Dunn wins by way of tko.
