NAAFS Night of Champions Pro Series Heavyweight Bout- Greg Maynard vs. Stipe Miocic

December 5th, 2010
Featured Professional Bout
Heavyweight Bout (265 lbs)-
Greg Maynard (Hell’s Forty Fight Team) vs. Stipe Miocic (Strong Style Fight Team)
Maynard is an out-of-stater coming to Cleveland from West Virginia. Maynard is sponsored
by Intimidation Clothing, which you can check out at www.IntimidationClothing.com. The
very partisan crowd is letting Maynard hear it as they are chanting “Stipe, Stipe, Stipe” during
Maynard’s introduction. Miocic is also sponsored by Intimidation Clothing, and is escorted to
the cage by the Strong Style team en masse. Maynard is a relatively short heavyweight, while
Miocic looks like he could drop to light heavyweight. Miocic has several inches in height over
Maynard and we’re ready to rock and roll. The crowd is getting behind Miocic and he stumbles
Maynard with a jab. Miocic is throwing jabs and legkicks while Maynard is returning fire.
Miocic is landing some heavy leg kicks to Maynard’s lead leg, both to the inside and outside.
Maynard appeared to be mumbling to himself following a Miocic combo, and I’m almost certain
he said “Go, Go Gadget arms.” If you are a fan of boxing, this fight is for you. Miocic begins
peppering Maynard with knees and uppercuts. Despite the damage he is taking, Maynard looks
cool and collected. Round 1 goes to Stipe Miocic 10-9.
Round 2
Maynard grins at his opponent to begin the round and it seems to awaken Stipe. Stipe stumbles
Maynard with another nasty leg kick and follows with a body hook. More leg kicks by Miocic.
Now he’s working on the rear leg. Maynard crumbles after a frenzy of shots. Miocic threw
punches, kicks, and knees and the referee had no choice but to step in and stop the fight. Stipe
Miocic wins this heavyweight bout by way of 2nd round TKO, and that puts a wrap on tonight’s
NAAFS 2010 Night of Champions. Thanks for following the semi-live blog and make sure you
keep checking back with ProFighting-Fans.com for the latest in mixed martial arts.

NAAFS Night of Champions 2010 Pro Series Welterweight Title Bout- Daniel Head vs. Nick Duell

December 5th, 2010
Welterweight (170 lbs) Pro Series Title Fight
Daniel Head (Indiana Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Academy) vs. Nick Duell (Strong Style)
Duell is sponsored by Intimidation Clothing, which,I should mention, can be checked out at
www.IntimidationClothing.com.
Round 1
Head is taking the fight on short notice, replacing a tough fighter. Head was featured on the
latest season of The Ultimate Fighter, but was eliminated by Jeff Lentz in the preliminary round.
The heavily-tattooed Duell looks ready and takes a southpaw stance. Head’s kicks are blocked
and Duell catches one and gains a takedown. Duell is inside Head’s guard, and Head looks
comfortable on the ground. Duell is landing punches in bunches to the body of Head.Duell is
doing what he does best and is striking hard from the top. Duell has Head pressed into the cage
and a cut is open on Head’s hairline. Head looks for a kimura, but Duell shockingly takes his arm
all the way backwards and escapes. Duell is punished Head and lets him stand up after throwing
some nasty elbows. Head is really bleeding now. A scramble results in Duell taking Head’s back.
Head is looking for a kimura, but Duell slips free. Duell put the pressure on Head and I’d score
this one 10-9 on the official unofficial scorecard in favor of Nick Duell.
Round 2
Duell looks on as the doctor takes a look at Head’s cut. The cut is okay and we’re good to go.
Duell slips after throwing a kick and Head jumps into Duell’s guard. Duell looks for an armbar
and another. Head is well-versed in jiu-jitsu and is able to slip free. Head attempts an armbar of
his own and nearly catches Duell. Duell’s flexibility is impeccable. Head is looking for another
armbar and Duell comes up on top. Duell gives Head a steady diet of punches and Duell looks to
take Head’s back. Triangle attempt by Duell, reminiscent of Toby Imada of Bellator, and Duell
locks in an armbar instead. . Head taps to an armbar and Nick Duell is the 2010 NAAFS Pro
Series Welterweight Champion by way of armbar. Duell is the first man to submit Daniel
Head, which is a testament to Duell’s jiu-jitsu training at Strong Style MMA.

NAAFS Night Of Champions 2010 Pro Series Featherweight Championship bout- Donny Walker vs. Billy Vaughan

December 5th, 2010
145 lb Pro Title Fight- Donny Walker (Griffon Rawl) vs. Billy Vaughan (Buckeye MMA)
This fight is brought to you by Intimidation Clothing. Make sure you check out their fine line of
MMA gear at www.IntimidationClothing.com. Both the challenger (Vaughan) and the champion
(Walker) are sponsored by Intimidation Clothing. Walker was wearing the new Winged Skulls
design, while Walker is wearing his own signature shirt produced by Intimidation. The artistic
staff at Intimidation is really doing incredible work.
You may remember that Walker won the belt by defeating a tough Mike Nesto, while on
the same night, Vaughan defeated highly-touted Ryan Lang, a 4-time Ohio State Wrestling
Champion in high school as well as an All-American Wrestler at Northwestern.
Round 1
This fight’s for the Pro Series Featherweight Belt. Vaughan throws wild punches that are
blocked by Walker. Vaughan looks for a shot and looks to have cut Walker’s brow. Vaughan
throws more wild uppercuts and uses them to set up a takedown. Vaughan drops back for a
heelhook, Walker looks composed in his defense and throws a flurry of punches and elbows
on his way to being on top of Vaughan. Walker is in sidecontrol and has Vaughan’s right arm
tied up. Walker takes Vaughan’s back and quickly sinks in a rear naked choke. Vaughan taps
immediately. Donny Walker leaps up on the cage above me and wipes the blood off of his head
and licks it. That fight was a testament for the toughness of Walker, as he weathered a flurry
of punches and a heelhook before submitting a tough opponent. Expect big things from Donny
Walker in the future, especially since Jason Dent is behind him and is likely in the ear of the
WEC/UFC supporting his teammate. Additionally, expect to hear from Billy Vaughan, as that
kid is tough and has a huge upside.

NAAFS Night of Champions Pro Series Featherweight Bout- Kevin Rothacker vs. Doug Kulbis

December 5th, 2010
145 lb. Bout- Kevin Rothacker (Strong Style MMA) vs. Doug Kulbis (Evolve MMA)
Fighters from two of the top Northeast Ohio gyms will face off as Strong Style (Independence,
Ohio) fighter Kevin Rothacker takes on Evolve MMA (Akron) fighter Doug Kulbis.
Kulbis is absolutely covered in tattoos, all of which are excellently done.
Round 1
Kulbis takes his traditional southpaw stance and lands a quick one-two combo. Rothacker
is squinting out of his right eye just seconds into the fight. Rothacker is working on head
movement and is learing quickly to avoid the combos of Kulbis. Kulbis lands a left head kick
to the chin of Rothacker, but Rothacker seems composed. Both men are flurrying. Rothacker
uses a Kulbis head kick (which lands, I might add), to take Kulbis down. Rothacker is in Kulbis’
guard and Kulbis is working to stand up. Rothacker seems to hae recovered from the early shots
he took and now has Kulbis on his back against the cage. Kulbis works to butterfly guard and
kicks Rothacker off. Both men are on their feet in the center of the cage. Kulbis is throwing
a variety of strikes, but Rothacker returns the favor. Despite an early striking advantage by
Kulbis, Rothacker stayed strong and took the round after weathering the storm. 10-9 for Kevin
Rothacker.
Round 2
Rothacker’s corner reminds him to move left to avoid Kulbis’ left hand and leg. Kulbis is
throwing a lot of punches, but not landing much of anything. Rothacker is giving up a good deal
of reach, and looks to be struggling to get inside of Kulbis’ range. Rothacker clinches and throws
some knees to the body of Kulbis. Kulbis lands a head kick. Rothacker’s right hand is beginning
to drop, leaving himself vulnerable to Kulbis’ power. That last head kick from Kulbis, and a left
cross has split open Rothacker’s eyebrow. Rothacker is a tough customer and keeps pressing
the action. Rothacker floors Kulbis with a few rights and is drilling Kulbis from inside Kulbis’
guard. Both men are tired now and the action has slowed down significantly. Kulbis is throwing
elbows from the bottom and is eating some fists for his troubles. 10-9 for Rothacker. Wow. After
a round like that one, this 3rd round should be a slugfest, as the fight could be hanging in the
balance.
Round 3
The action is delayed by the ringside doctor examining Rothacker’s cut, but it’s deemed
acceptable and we’ll go to round 3. Leg kicks by Rothacker nearly take Kulbis down. . Nice
body shot by rothacker. Kulbis throws a double flying knee, but misses narrowly. Both men are
throwing wild strikes, none really landing squarely. They clinch briefly and Rothatcker throws
and lands a head kick. Rothacker is really bleeding now, but is moving forward. Kulbis scores
a takedown and looks to mount. Rothacker gets to his feet and drops Kulbis with strikes and
mounts with heavy strikes. I had that one 10-9 for Rothacker, and my official unofficial score
had the fight 30-27 for Kevin Rothacker, but both men showed tremendous guts and skill. The
fight goes to the judges and they have the fight for Kevin Rothacker by unanimous decision (29-
28×3). It’s a shame that this fight had to come to an end. Great fight by both Kevin Rothacker
and Doug Kulbis, alike. If Mr. Greg Kalikas (Pro Series Matchmaker, announcer, and President
of the NAAFS) reads this blog, I want to see a rematch!

NAAFS Night of Champions 2010 Amateur bout recap and pro preview

December 5th, 2010
After a nice card of Amateur fights, we’ll move on to a nice card of Professional Fights. Some of
the differences are longer rounds (5 minute rounds for pro fights as opposed to 3 for amateurs)
and the ability to throw elbows on the ground.
An interesting fact to note is that the undercard fighters were an astounding 38-3 combined
in the NAAFS in the year 2010. That just goes to show that the NAAFS doesn’t just grant
fighters a berth in the championship fights; a spot in the Night of Champions needs to be
earned, which is something for which the NAAFS should be commended. In comparison,
the professional fighters on tonight’s card were a combined 9-1 heading into tonight’s
fights. I’d be remiss if I didn’t congratulate NAAFS Amateur Matchmaker Nicole Long,
for keeping these Amateurs active and paired
up with the best possible competition in the year 2010. Great work, Nicole.

NAAFS Night Of Champions Women’s Amateur 155 lb Title Bout- Jessica Zomcik vs Tamikka Brents

December 5th, 2010
Womens 155 lb Title- Jessica Zomcik (Team DNA) vs. Tamikka Brents (Warrior Concepts/
5Knuckle MMA)
Not to be forgotten, the ladies of the NAAFS will take the cage next. Jessica “The DNA
Princess” Zomcik comes to the cage sporting a pink sash with her nickname stitched on it. That
is certainly unconventional fightwear, but she looks ready to scrap. Brents is a stocky fighter
with heavy hands. On paper, this fight is going to be a brawl for the 2010 NAAFS Female
Amateur Series 155 Lb Title. Brents has an intense scowl, while Zomcik seems to be enjoying
her time in the cage.
Round 1
Brents is quickly looking for a takedown, which she scores by lifting and slamming her
opponent. Both fighters are from out of state, with Zomcik representing Pennsylvania, and
Brents hailing from Illinois. Brents briefly has sidemount, but takes mount and drops some heavy
punches to the face of her opponent. Brents is relentless with her strikes. This is getting out of
control and Jerry Krycz stops the action. Zomcik is visibly battered, and for good reason, as
she absorbed a great deal of punches to the face. Tamikka Brents is the 2010 NAAFS Female
Amateur Series 155 lb. Champion due to a vicious TKO.

December 5th, 2010
265lb Title Bout- Rick Day (USA Martial Arts) vs. Nelson Best (Team Impact)
Rick Day is a strong challenger for my 1st Annual “Night of Championship Facial Hair,” as
he’s sporting an impressive ‘stache. He looks very tall and lean for a heavyweight, as compared
to his opponent, who is stocky in build. Nelson Best is sporting the new Sponsorship shirt by
Intimidation Clothing (www.IntimidationClothing.com) in the green/black style. Best looks like
more of a typical heavyweight.
Round 1
Day is last year’s NAAFS Amateur Heavyweight champ, and will be looking to defend. Day
is undefeated, while Best only has one defeat to his name. Best appears to be doing most of the
action early on, but Day is waking up. Best throws a nice counter right cross that floors Day. Day
doesn’t know where he is for a moment, but is able to get to his feet on his own. Nelson Best is
your 2010 NAAFS Amateur Series Heavyweight Champion by way of knockout in under 2
minutes.

December 5th, 2010
205 lbs Title Bout- Mike King (Buckeye MMA) vs. Jeff Hughes (Instigator Fight Team)
Mike King represents Buckeye MMA, along with Billy Vaughan, who will be facing Donny
Walker later tonight for the Pro Series Featherweight Belt. King is sponsored by Intimidation
Clothing, as is this semi-live blog. Check them out at www.IntimidationClothing.com for a nice
selection of MMA-Themed apparel. AJ Aeschlimann, who I am told is not fighting tonight
due to an injury, is working overtime, as he escorted Jeff Hughes to the cage along with Chase
Owens in the last fight.
Round 1
Hughes looks light on his feet and defends an early takedown attempt. A knee below the belt of
King stops our action momentarily. Hughes is using an underhook to press King into the cage.
King is working hard and defends a single leg takedown. King tees off on Hughes with a flurry
of 1-2 punches. The right hand is particularly effective and he wobbles Hughes. Hughes can’t
stand and King lets him have it. The referee Jerry Krycz jumps in to stop the fight and it’s all
over. Our 2010 NAAFS Amateur Light Heavyweight Champion is Mike King, by way of 1st

Bob Rech is escorted to the cage by his team and coaches, including Jessica Zomcik, who will
be competing later on the card. Owens is brought out to the cage by NAAFS Pro Series Champ
AJ Aeschlimann, who I thought was a member of the Instigator Fight Team, but I shouldn’t be
shocked by the closeness of the fighters in the MMA community. Rech is announced as being
Bob “The Train” Rech. I would have also appreciated Bob “Shhhhhhh”Rech, but not up to me I
guess.
Round 1
Owens locks up a tight bodylock, but Rech is furiously defending the takedown. Owens keeps
looking for the takedown and nearly gives up a guillotine. Owens eventually gets a takedown,
but finds himself briefly in position to be submitted by gogoplata, which would have left me
stunned. Rech pushes off his back and reverses position and goes into Owens’ guard. Rech to full
mount, but is unable to do much with it. I’m going to score that tough round for Bob Rech 10-9,
based on submission attempts, a tough initial takedown defense, and the position reversal.
Round 2
Owens looks tired in the corner, while Rech seems fresh despite 3 minutes of action. Owens
lands a nice left body kick and Rech shoots deep for takedown. Rech briefly finds himself in
a guillotine, but is able to work his way to side control. Rech lands some knees from the side
control, but is swept by Owens and finds himself on the bottom. Owens appears to have split
Rech open around Rech’s right eye. Owens is tough on top and is doing a nice job of keeping
his hips low to the mat, to prevent being rolled. Owens takes Rech’s back. Rech slips free and
quickly jumps on top of Owens. Tough round to score. I am glad that I just have to tell you
what’s going on inside the cage and not decide the outcome. At any rate, I’ll give that round to
Owens, so on my officially unofficial scorecard, I see this fight knotted up going into the 3rd
round.
Round 3
Rech scores a quick takedown and Owens catches Rech in half guard. A scramble finds Rech
out front with Owens on his knees, defending a guillotine attempt. Owens drives forward and
takes Rech down. Owens moves to side control, but a scrambling Rech ends up on top. Owens
attempts a kimura, and Rech spins to defend. Owens scrambles to the top and gains full mount.
Owens moves to Rech’s back and this fight is going to the scorecards. I am estimating that
Owens took the fight 29-28. The official judges decision has Chase “Why You Do ‘Em Like
That” Owens winning the 2010 NAAFS Amateur Series Middleweight Title by way of
unanimous decision.
