Great night of fights with Mayweather vs Marquez, UFC 103

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

If you are a fan of fighting sports then tonight is a great night to be alive. However, if you’re not willing to fork out more than $50 for fights it makes it a bit tough. Tonight is one of the biggest nights of 2009 with two major events on tap. Floyd Mayweather Jr. returns from a brief retirement to face Juan Manuel Marquez on PPV and our DFN Sports partner Pro Boxing Fans will be providing the Mayweather vs Marquez results including their own round by round scoring for the fight.

For fans of Mixed Martial Arts, the UFC will be back in action for the second time this week. After an exciting UFC Fight Night 19 on Wednesday night which kicked off the premier of The Ultimate Fighter 10, the Ultimate Fighting Championship presents UFC 103 tonight which is also a Pay Per View event. Like our friends at Pro Boxing Fans, we will be providing the official UFC 103 results as well as a live blog of the action with round by round updates.

A Fan’s View from his Couch: UFC 103 Preview

Friday, September 18th, 2009

WOW! Before I get into my breakdown of UFC 103, let me say WOW, UFC Fight Night 19 was awesome! If we can have three more wars like we did on Wednesday night we would have the best week of MMA possibly ever and definitely the last 10 years.  The Condit vs. Ellenberger fight was 15 minutes of mayhem….Follow that up with Gray Maynard vs. Roger Huerta, or as I like to call it two 155ers who seem to think the cure for cancer is hidden in the other man’s face, and it was their job to beat it out! And last but not least, the nasty guillotine choke Diaz pulled off was straight disgusting! Let me say it one more time, WOW!

UFC 103 Preview

Let me start by saying this card has my two of my three favorite fighters of all time on it (Koscheck and Belfort), so that may be why I am a little more jazzed up than normal; however, regardless of your personal feelings this card is solid. Remember, for the official UFC 103 results listed online as each fight is complete, stay here at ProFighting-fans.com.

Rich Franklin v. Vitor Belfort (195 Catch Weight)
Two former champions looking to prove they both deserve a shot to remove the ‘former’ from their title.  ‘Ace’ in his prime was a striking machine and could knock the proverbial block off of any of his opponents, but I believe those days are two Anderson Silva ass kicking’s in his past.  While Belfort on the other hand has the quickest, not arguably, but the quickest hands in MMA, and although Belfort has been around since the mid 90′s he is a very young 32.  Age does matter and in this fight I believe it is age and energy that lead the “Phenom” to a 3rd round KO and leave Rich with yet another broken nose!

Mirko Cro Cop v. Junior Dos Santos
This fight is like trying to put together one of your grandma’s jigsaw puzzles, just to realize that not all the pieces are here.  By that I mean we don’t know what to expect from either fighter.  Is Cro Cop as old as he has looked in recent action, is Junior the wrecking machine we have come to know….or….is Mirko back to his old was as he was when he destroyed Mostapha Al Turk and is Dos Santos simply a two hit wonder jumping up to a league he isn’t quite ready for?  Those are the questions that will be answered Saturday.  What’s going to happen; Cro Cop sees, seeks and destroys a young Junior who is being touted as the next big thing in the heavyweight division just a little to early, Mirko by 2nd round TKO.

Josh Koscheck v. Frank Trigg
Just when you thought that MMA meant ‘mixed martial arts’ you learn that in this fight it simply stands for “Men on Mat Altercation” as this fight turns into a pure wrestling match.  And Kos will be favored in every match he ever enters in wrestling this side of GSP.  I hate to be that cut and dry, but this fight is that cut and dry.  Koscheck by Trigg gargling on his own blood due to ground and pound in the 3rd.

UFC Press Conference answers some questions, but not all

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Today’s UFC press conference, covered today by our partners at DFN Sports answered a few questions and verified a few UFC rumors. Tito Ortiz is back, and his back is nearly healthy. Vitor Belfort is back in the UFC, and he will be facing Rich Franklin in the main event of UFC 103 in the Light Heavyweight division. The UFC and ESPN have indeed reached a deal to broadcast in the U.K. which will begin with a free HD broadcast of UFC 101 on August 8, 2009. And several former Affliction fighters have been signed by the UFC, but Andrei Arlovski & Tim Sylvia are not being considered.

But two major questions remained after today’s media conference. First, what the heck does Fedor Emelianenko think he is doing, or better yet, why does he let these morons continue to represent him and hurt his career? And secondly, what is the big deal that will change the UFC forever that Dana White spoke of weeks ago and could not comment on today?

With Fedor, it seems Dana & Co. have done everything they possibly could including offering Fedor a “F*$%ing assload” of money. Ahh, Dana White has such a lovely way with words… My favorite quote from White today on the topic was “I wasn’t a dick at all, I was the nicest Dana ever.” But it is clear that Dana White made the right decision as splitting half of the promotion just for Fedor Emelianenko would have been a horrendous business decision.

As for the “big news” that was not talked about today, I have to think it is a major network TV deal, likely with ESPN. Considering the ESPN U.K. deal is official and Dana White has made it clear that a network deal is indeed a major goal stating that “we’re putting serious fights on network TV…It’s gonna be so awesome for the fans” and that a network deal would not change the current Pay Per View model that has been so successful for the UFC.

Time will tell where the UFC goes in the future. All I know is that the UFC continues to get bigger and the competition, despite efforts to compete, is being left in the dust.
