Strikeforce Labels Women’s MMA Weight Classes

Friday, February 26th, 2010

After conflicting media reports and press releases this week from Strikeforce themselves, it was announced on tonight’s Strikforce fights on Showtime that Strikeforce is “abiding by the MMA unified rules of conduct when it comes to labeling its female weight classes.” “That means that Cris Cyborg, the 145 pound champion is the Middleweight champ while tonight Hashi and Kaufman will meet to determine the first ever women’s 135 pound, or Welterweight champion.” This is a breath of fresh air from Strikeforce and makes me feel a lot better about their organization and marketing message after they referred to the title in a piece on Kaufman earlier this week as the “Bantamweight” championship and later released a press release referring to it as the “Welterweight” championship. To add further confusion, the Strikeforce Wikipedia page called the 135 pound division the “Featherweight” division at the time of writing this post.

Strikeforce Challengers is now underway on Showtime and will be headlined by the Women’s Welterweight Championship fight between Sarah Kaufman and Takayo Hashi as we will continue to update the Strikeforce Challengers 6 results online at ProFighting-fans.com.
