Sonnen was a top contender in the WEC's middleweight division and actually beat the WEC Middleweight Champion, Paulo Fihlo in November of 2008 at WEC 36, but Fihlo did not make weight meaning the bout could not be for the belt. Sonnen won easily via unanimous decision and a month later the WEC's middleweight division was absorbed by the UFC.

Sonnen has held the titles of Gladiator Challenge Light Heavyweight Champion, Hitman Light Heavyweight Champion, Danger Zone Light Heavyweight Champion, and Rumble at the River Tournament Champion. He was a NCAA All-American wrestler and US. Olympic Team Alternate. Sonnen holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon in sociology.
