One of the top-ranked lightweights in MMA today is current Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez. Alvarez ascended to the top of the Bellator 155 pound ladder by winning three fights in 11 weeks defeating Toby Imada in June 2009 at Bellator 12 to win the lightweight tournament. In addition to the Bellator Fighting Championship promotion, Alvarez also competes with the Japanese-based DREAM promotion.

Alvarez is widely considered to be one of the top lightweight fighters in MMA and by some to be one of the top pound for pound fighters as well. Alvarez has suffered just two career defeats with one coming as a welterweight to former Strikeforce fighter Nick "The Goat" Thompson and his lone loss at 155 pounds to Shinya Aoki.
