Fighter Profile: Michael Bisping
UFC Record: 11-3 Height: 6’2” Weight: 185lbs Born: Cyprus, Lancashire, United Kingdom MMA Gym: Wolfslair
Michael “The Count” Bisping is a professional mixed martial artist, competing in the UFC’s middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. He specializes in boxing. Bisping was a contender on The Ultimate Fighter season 3, and eventually went on to win the light heavyweight contest. His first fight in the UFC, as a light heavyweight was against Eric Shafer. Putting his 12-0 record on the line, he dispatched Shafer late in the first round with a knockout. After a win over Matt Hamill, Bisping was set to face fellow up and comer, Rashad Evans, but lost a split decision, and suffered the first loss of his career, 14 fights in. After the loss, Bisping decided to make the drop to middleweight at 185 pounds. He was successful in his middleweight debut, and rattled off three wins in a row. The streak culminated in his defeat of Chris Leben. Next, he faced Dan Henderson after they had both been coaches on The Ultimate Fighter: U.S. vs. U.K. Bisping was defeated by a brutal knockout in one of the best grudge matches ever at the historic UFC 100.
Bisping is currently riding a three-fight win streak, over Dan Miller, Yoshihiro Akiyama and Jorge Rivera. His fight with Akiyama received Fight of the Night honors, making him a three-time winner of the award.
Leading up to his fight with Jorge Rivera there was a lot of talk between the fighters. Rivera even made a series of YouTube videos mocking Bisping, and Bisping fired back in the media. In the middle of the first round, Bisping landed an illegal knee to the head of the grounded Rivera, and was deducted a point. The fight continued, and Bisping ultimately won by knockout in the second round. After the fight, Bisping proceeded to spit into Rivera’s corner, and confronted him about the videos. He was later fined by the UFC. Bisping is set to be the next coach on The Ultimate Fighter season 14, making it his second time as a coach, and his third time on the show. He will be coaching opposite Jason Miller, and they are set to square off at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale in December.
