World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) News

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) NewsWorld Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) is a promotion of American Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) which currently competes in three weightclasses. The WEC is owned by Zuffa, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and their events were televised on the cable station Versus. The WEC uses the same rules as the UFC and fights are held in a similar, but smaller octagon cage.

The WEC was started in 2001 and was acquired by Zuffa in 2006. In December of 2008 the UFC absorbed several weight classes including the Light Heavyweight, Middleweight and Welterweight divisions leaving the WEC with a focus on three weight classes; Lightweight, Featherweight & Bantamweight. In late 2010 it was announced that the entire WEC would be absorbed into the UFC at the end of 2010. As a result, the final WEC event in the organization's history was WEC 53 on December 16, 2010 in Glendale, Arizona.
