Boxing Super Middleweight Division Rankings

The super middleweight division is a classic European battleground. The head Euro for the last decade had been Joe Calzaghe, but with his retirement the division is in flux. While the Europeans hold the top spots in the division for now, some rising American stars are on the horizon.

The updated boxing super middleweight rankings are now here!

1. Mikkel Kessler – The only stain on Mikkel Kessler's record is a loss to Joe Calzaghe in a well contested fight. However, that fight was over a year and a half ago and Kessler hasn't gotten back in the ring with a notable opponent yet. While he has to be regarded as the top guy in the division for now, he could be passed by default if he doesn't take a major fight soon.

2. Carl Froch – Froch backed up all of his talking when he knocked out Jermain Taylor in the 12th round of their fight. However, his flaws were exposed by Taylor, and a fight between Froch and anybody else in the top 5 has to be considered a toss up at best for the Cobra.

3. Lucian Bute – Just as Taylor suffered a last second blow to end his title dreams, Bute survived one to retain his. Librado Andrade could not finish off Bute, in part thanks to the referee's curious actions. Rumored next bouts for Bute include a rematch with Andrade or a fight with Allan Green.

4. Jermain Taylor – Taylor once again showed he had all of the tools and once again showed he has trouble using all of them at the same time. Taylor was dominating the Froch fight and then gassed, eventually succumbing with only 12 seconds left in the contest. Another knockout loss has to be tough for his psyche, but he's young and talented enough to make another run in the future.

5. Librado Andrade – If Taylor predictably gasses, then Andrade is predictably indefatigable. Getting back into the win column against Vitali Tsypko, Andrade is hoping for a second shot at Bute. A showdown with Froch, pitting two men with iron chins and endless stamina, would surely have fireworks.

Up and Coming Americans – These four fighters show that within the next year or two it could be the Americans who call the super middleweight division their stomping ground – Andre Dirrell, Andre Ward, Allan Green, Daniel Jacobs

Other Notable Super Middleweights – Edison Miranda, Jean Pascal, Sakio Bika
