friend Lyoto Machida. |

As part of his column entitled The Triangle Choke, Dryden takes a look at the Top 10 MMA fighters in the world and ranks them pound for pound. While similar lists can be found online, our pound for pound rankings are some of the most accurate found anywhere online or in print as Dryden's experience around MMA and wealth of knowledge is unmatched. Also, look to ProFighting-fans.com for MMA coverage and additonal 2009 MMA rankings, and keep checking back each month for updates to our rankings of UFC weight classes, non-UFC fighters, WEC fighters and MMA pound for pound ranking lists.

Fedor holds a career record 30-1 which includes victories over some of the greatest in the history of the sport. Fedor was scheduled to fight Josh Barnett for Affliction on August 1st. Barnett tested positive for steroids which started the dominos to fall. From there, Affliction ceased all MMA promotional endeavors. As result, Fedor was a free agent. Rumors swirled that Fedor was finally going to sign with the UFC, however, with Fedor insisting his fights being co-promoted with M-1 Global, the deal fell through. Fedor was quickly gobbled up by Strikeforce, easily the biggest coup in the history of the organization. Now, Fedor will face the 10-0 monster of a man, Brett Rogers at Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers.

The Spider has been ridiculed by many, including yours truly, however the fact is that the reigning UFC Middleweight Champion is one of the greatest fighters to ever enter the cage. In the same vein as the greatest athletes in any sport, Silva used the negative press as extra motivation as he faced fan-favorite Forrest Griffin at UFC 101. Silva was a man on a mission and quickly disposed of the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Silva toyed with Griffin mocking him by sticking his chin out and bobbing his head with his hands down. This was not simply theatrics, it was more than that. Silva baited Forrest into chasing him and eliminated all doubt that he was clearly the best fighter. Silva, while backpedaling, knocked Griffin senseless 3:23 into the 1 st round. Silva is by far the best fighter in the 185lb division and there is only one fighter that can compete with him in the 205lb division, good buddy Lyoto Machida. Many have called for a catch weight match against GSP, the fact is Silva would dominate GSP with his striking ability.
Dream Matchup: Lyoto Machida at 205lbs

Quite possibly the best athlete in the sport, GSP is well versed in all aspects of the game. He dominated the dangerous Thiago Alves at UFC 100 to retain his UFC Welterweight Championship belt and most likely will get the winner of the UFC 103 fight between Mike Swick and Martin Kampmann. Although both fighters bring a unique challenge for GSP, neither will have enough to take the title. GSP doesn’t have a legitimate contender within the UFC Welterweight Division.

The Dragon brings a unique Karate based style to the Octagon. He rarely gets hit and uses tremendous footwork to pepper his opponent with strikes. He demolished the likes of Rashad Evans and the intimidating Thiago Silva. His next bout reads like an old Japanese Karate movie as the Dragon will face Shogun. Shogun Rua holds a career record of 18-3 including victories over Rampage Jackson, Chuck Liddell and Alistair Overeem. Can Shogun skin the Dragon? Very unlikely as Machida will add another victory to his undefeated record of 15-0 at UFC 104 on October 24 and remain the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion.

The most dominating force in all of MMA. Lesnar possesses a rare combination of power and athleticism. He annihilated the experienced Frank Mir at UFC 100. His next opponent will be a tremendous challenge in the form of Shane Carwin who stands in at 6’4” and weighs 255lbs. Carwin holds an undefeated record of 11-0. Despite Carwin’s wrestling experience and strength, he will not have enough to unseat the UFC Heavyweight Champion Lesnar at UFC 106.

Penn dominated Kenny Florian at UFC 101 with an impressive display of striking and a lethal ground attack. Penn throttled the talented Florian for three rounds then caught him in a Rear Naked Choke in round 4. Penn’s next defense of the UFC Lightweight Championship belt should be against the very dangerous and intense Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez.

Henderson, a former Pride Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Champion, knocked Michael Bisping into oblivion at UFC 100. Henderson is a world class wrestler with an explosive right hand. Despite being 39 years old, Henderson stays in great shape and is still incredibly effective. Henderson holds a career record of 25-7 and is on a 3 fight winning streak. Henderson yearns for a rematch against Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

Although Torres was recently upset by Brian Bowles at WEC 42, his career record of 37-2 is hard to argue with. Torres deserves and should get a rematch against Bowles in the near future.
