UFC Flyweight Division Rankings

Ranking of the UFC's 125-pound Flyweight division - December 2011

In December 2011 the UFC announced the creation of a long-rumored Flyweight Division to showcase the world's best 125 pound fighters. With the addition of the new weight class two of the promotion's top Bantamweights, Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson immediately had a new home in a weight class that fits both fighters much better than 135 lbs. While new blood will be coming into the UFC with this addition, including already signed fighters Ian McCall, Yasuhiro Urushitani and John Lineker, our Top 5 UFC Flyweights is rather basic for now and does not feature a single fighter who has faced anyone on this list. That all changes in March 2012 as the Flyweights become official at UFC on FX 2 when a 4-man tournament to crown the UFC's first ever Flyweight Champion will kick off.

Note that there is no mention of other top-ranked MMA Flyweights outside of the UFC as this is a UFC-specific list.

And now the ranking of the best of the UFC Flyweight Division...

Top UFC Flyweight Fighter Rankings:

1. Joseph Benavidez - (15-2, 2-0 UFC, 5-2 WEC) - Team Alpha Male member and former WEC Bantamweight top contender Joseph Benavidez tops our list as the #1 Flyweight in the UFC and our favorite to be the first ever UFC Flyweight Champion. A winner of 7 of 9 fights for the UFC and WEC combined, only UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz has defeated Benavidez in 17 pro MMA fights. Benavidez will enter the 4-man tournament to crown the UFC's first ever Flyweight Champion facing Yasuhiro Urushitani on March 3, 2012 at UFC on FX 2.

2. Demetrious Johnson - (9-2, 2-1 UFC, 2-1 WEC) - Demetrious Johnson defeated Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto and Miguel Torres to earn a shot at Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz but lost a unanimous decision in October 2011. With the UFC expanding yet again and adding the 125 pound weight class, Johnson now has a new home at the weight he should have been fighting at all along. Johnson's first UFC Flyweight fight will be opposite former Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight Champ Ian McCall on March 3, 2012 at UFC on FX 2.

3. Ian McCall - (11-2, 0-0 UFC, 1-2 WEC) - Ian McCall gets the call to the UFC after defeating Jussier da Silva, Dustin Ortiz and Darrell Montague fighting for Tachi Palace Fights where he was the promotion's Flyweight Champion. McCall will face Johnson on March 3, 2012 at UFC on FX 2 as part of the 4-man tournament to crown the UFC's first ever Flyweight Champion.

4. Yasuhiro Urushitani - (19-4-6, 0-0 UFC) - Japenese Flyweight Yasuhiro Urushitani is the 4th member of the tournament to crown the UFC's first ever Flyweight Champion and will make his UFC debut opposite the #1 fighter on this list, Joseph Benavidez. Currently riding a 5-fight winning streak, Urushitani has lost just once in his last 16 pro MMA bouts, all of which have taken place in Japan. The reigning Shooto 123 pound champion looks to make an impression in his first fight on U.S. soil on March 3, 2012 at UFC on FX 2.

5. John Lineker - (19-5, 0-0 UFC) - The only member of our current Top 5 list of UFC Flyweights not competing in the 4-man tournament in March, Brazilian John Lineker is one of the five Flyweights currently under contract with the UFC with his debut yet to be scheduled. After a 6-5 start to his pro MMA career Lineker has won 13 straight including a 7-0 record in 2011 alone.
