WEC Bantamweight Division Rankings

Ranking of the WEC's 135-pound Bantamweight division - March 2010

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC)The 135 pound division of the WEC was lead by one of the most dominant fighters in major Mixed Martial Arts. That was until August 9, 2009 when Brian Bowles shocked the MMA world in winning the WEC Bantamweight Championship by knocking out Miguel Angel Torres. Torres' dominance over the 135-pound world was so great that many were surprised when Takeya Mizugaki lasted 5 rounds with Torres at WEC 40 after taking the fight on short notice replacing the injured Bowles. The Unanimous Decision over the WEC-newcomer Mizugaki was the first fight that made it to a decision for Torres since 2005; a span of 11 fights. But Bowles took the surprise to a whole new level at WEC 42 and wore the WEC Bantamweight Championship belt for all of 7 months before his first title defense. Before their WEC 47 fight, top contender Dominick Cruz said he was going to pick Bowles apart and he certainly stuck to the game plan showing cat-like quickness and agility. In the 2nd round of their WEC 47 title fight Bowles suffered a broken hand and did not answer the bell between rounds to once again see a new WEC Bantamweight Champion crowned.

The list of the top Bantamweight fighters in the WEC is an interesting one. With four straight losses, Manny Tapia punched his ticket out of the top 10 after being the one-time top contender. Dominick Cruz, the new WEC Bantamweight Champion, was not even in our Top 5 in June 2009, and has climber the ladder in surprising fashion. So who did make our top Bantamweights in the WEC list? Scroll down and read the information below to find out!

Note that there is no mention of other top-ranked MMA Bantamweights outside of the WEC as this is a WEC-specific list.

And now the ranking of the best of the WEC Bantamweight Division...

Top WEC Bantamweight Fighter Rankings:

1. Dominick Cruz - (15-1; 5-1 WEC) - Now 5-0 as a bantamweight with his lone career loss coming to Urijah Faber, Cruz has truly earned the title of WEC Bantamweight Champion. After seemingly taking the first two rounds against Brian Bowles @ WEC 47, Bowles did not answer the bell for Round 3 with a broken hand giving Bowles his first career loss and Cruz the 135 pound belt. While he already topped Joseph Benavidez at WEC 42, it appears that the two may meet again in Cruz' first title defense atop the WEC 49 fight card.

2. Brian Bowles - (8-1; 5-1 WEC) - Brian Bowles shocked the MMA world at WEC 42 when he got the 1st round KO victory over Miguel Torres to become the new WEC Bantamweight Champion in August 2009. However his first title defense saw Bowles suffer a broken hand and Cruz take the 135 belt. It will surely be several months before we see Brian Bowles return to the Octagon as he looks to heal and get back to training.

3. Joseph Benavidez - (12-1; 4-1 WEC) - Benavidez dropped his first career professional fight to Dominick Cruz at WEC 42 but did not let the setback slow him down. He returned with a win @ WEC 45 over Rani Yahya then surprised the MMA world with his defeat of Miguel Angel Torres at WEC 47 in March. Expect to see Benavidez get a rematch with Cruz on the WEC 49 fight card with the WEC's 135 pound belt on the line.

4. Miguel Angel Torres - (37-3; 5-2 WEC) - After 17 straight victories and with a 37-1 MMA record Torres was near the top of most every list of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport. Torres' loss to Bowles at WEC 42 was quite the surprise, but following it with a loss to Joseph Benavidez in a fight where Torres had a 11 inch reach advantage was likely even more of a stunner. Torres will need some time to let the gash on his forehead heal before he returns to action, but fans can just hope he returns to his old form sometime in 2010.

5. Damacio Page - (15-4; 3-1 WEC) - Damacio "The Angel of Death" Page is 15-4 in his MMA career and 3-1 in the WEC with that lone loss coming to former bantamweight champion Brian Bowles. His most recent fight was a win over Will Campuzano at WEC 43 and he is slated to fight Antonio Banuelos on the PPV-televised portion of the WEC 48 fight card on April 24, 2010. The winner of the Page vs Banuelos fight will certainly position themself to move up in the 135 pound rankings in 2010.

WEC 47 - Cruz vs Bowles

Dominick Cruz was crowned the new WEC Bantamweight Champion when he defeated Brian Bowles at WEC 47 in March.

6. Antonio Banuelos - (17-5; 8-4 WEC) - Banuelos first appeared in the WEC at WEC 5 in 2002 and has fought 12 times with the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. With 5 wins in his last 7 WEC fights, Banuelos has been performing better or late and faces another tough test in Damacio Page on the PPV-televised portion of the WEC 48 fight card on April 24, 2010.

7. Scott Jorgensen - (9-3; 5-2 WEC) - With three straight wins and five wins in his last six fights, Scott Jorgensen is starting to open some eyes in the WEC. Jorgensen needed just 31 seconds to dispose of Chad George at WEC 47 and would be ranked higher on this WEC bantamweight list if not for losses to both Page and Banuelos. A fight with Rani Yahya or Takeya Mizugaki would be another great test for Jorgensen and WEC 49 seems like the right timing, so we will see if the WEC sees the opportunity for a great 135 pound matchup as well.

8. Rani Yahya - (15-5; 4-2 WEC) - With an impressive 14 career submission victories Yahya is a dangerous man on the ground and he has scored 4 victories in 6 career WEC fights. His 3-fight winning streak was snapped at the hands of top-contender Joseph Benavidez at WEC 45 in December 2009.

9. Takeya Mizugaki - (12-4-2; 1-2 WEC) - While Mizugaki opened a lot of eyes in defeat at WEC 40 in losing a Unanimous Decision to Miguel Torres, he followed it with a split decision win over Jeff Curran and a loss to Scott Jorgensen at WEC 45 to drop his WEC record to 1-2. Now Mizugaki's loss to Torres looks less impressive and he will need to score a few victories to ensure he remains in the WEC throughout 2010 and beyond.

10. Chad Mendes - (6-0; 1-0 WEC) - Manny Tapia and Akitoshi Tamura are two that were seriously looked at for the #10 spot on our WEC Bantamweight Rankings Top 10 list, but neither has really had much success of late with Tamura 1-2 in the WEC and Tapia having lost 4 straight. Thus, a newcomer to the WEC, Chad Mendes, comes in at #10 thanks to a solid debut in defeating Erik Koch at WEC 47. Mendes controlled the entire fight to score a 30-27 unanimous decision and remain undefeated in his MMA career.

WEC 47 - Benavidez vs Torres

Joseph Benavidez overcame a 11 inch reach disadvantage to top Miguel Torres at WEC 47.
