WEC Featherweight Division Rankings

Ranking of the WEC's loaded 145-pound featherweight division - June 2009

The 145 pound division has helped build the WEC as former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber has been the face of the organization. From his No Fear Energy drink ads that dominate each WEC event on Versus to the several World Extreme Cagefighting events held in his hometown of Sacramento, California, the WEC has built their name around the Featherweight star. World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC)But the emergence of other talented Featherweights has not only helped gain added attention to the WEC but also resulted in bringing Faber down to Earth. Mike Brown has taken the WEC's Featherweight division by storm since in the last year breaking into the WEC with a Unanimous Decision win over Jeff Curran at WEC 34. He proceeded to knock off the seemingly unbeatable Faber at WEC 36 while the Featherweight Division continued to improve. No longer is a long-past-his-prime Jens Pulver the #1 contender in this division as the WEC's Featherweight Division is now loaded with young stars on the rise and the experienced veterans at the top.

Note that there is no mention of top-ranked MMA Featherweights Hatsu Hioki or Marlon Sandro, etc. as this is a WEC-specific list. And now the ranking of the best of the WEC Featherweight Division...

Top WEC Featherweight Fighter Rankings:

  1. Mike Brown - The reigning WEC Featherweight Champion is riding a 10-fight winning streak with a 22-4 MMA career record and a 4-0 mark in the WEC. Two of those wins are over former champ Faber who has just three career losses. Another title defense or two and Brown may begin to see his name listed as one of the top pound for pound fighters in MMA.
  2. Urijah Faber - The former WEC Featherweight Champion holds a record of 22-3 with two losses to Brown at WEC 36 and WEC 41. Prior to Faber's first loss to Brown, Faber had won 13 straight fights over a 3 and 1/2 year span.
  3. Jose Aldo - I'll admit that I was not a believer in Aldo until recently. At WEC 41 Aldo proved once again his dominance with a flying knee that landed in Cub Swanson's face to earn the win just 8 seconds into the fight. Aldo is now 15-1 overall with a 5-0 WEC record winning his last three fights in the 1st round.
  4. Leonard Garcia - Garcia tasted victory in the WEC's first-ever event at WEC 1 in June 2001 and won 9 of his first 10 MMA fights, but two losses in three fights as a Lightweight in the UFC resulted in Garcia dropping to the 145 pound Featherwight division of the WEC. Since rejoining the WEC, Garcia has won two of three fights with his most recent fight a 1st round loss to WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown at WEC 39 in March 2009.
  5. Wagnney Fabiano - The signing of Wagnney Fabiano in August 2008 added even greater depth to the WEC's Featherweight Division further complicating division ranking lists like this one. Fabiano has not disappointed by going 2-0 in WEC bouts and holds a 12-1 overall MMA mark and is rumored to be facing the #4 Featherweight on this list, Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia, and WEC 42 in August 2009.
