This Wednesday’s Episode 5 continues with the focus on former NFL lineman Matt Mitrione, who is hampered by a shoulder injury, laboring through Team Rashad’s training session. “The Snitch,” as he was appropriately labeled in Episode 4, suggested to Coach Evans that he may need to get cortisone shot in order to continue in the tournament. Evans, who is skeptical, advises against the cortisone shot and warns that if he were to get the shot, it would only temporarily fix the problem and lead to more troubles.

The attention moves from Mitrione to Team Rampage’s last pick, Zak Jensen. Team Jackson is concentrating on improving Jensen’s ground game. Jensen, who has been almost non-existent up to this point, is quickly becoming the butt of all jokes. He doesn’t seem to be fitting in or taking the harassment very well either.

Back at Team Rashad’s training session; Mitrione is questioned once again, on whether he is “injured” or “hurt.” After watching him roll and develop his ground game, the coaches doubt that he is injured. Mitrione frustrates his coach when the stand-up part of practice begins by opting to rest and ice his ailing shoulder. Rashad goes as far as saying, “If you’re not hurt then stop playing and wasting people’s time.”

The fight announcement is next and Rashad chooses Justin Wren, a 22 year-old star-in-the-making, to take on UFC veteran Wes Sims. This looks, at least on paper, to be a good match-up.

At least one fighter from Team Rampage is not happy with the announcement; Marcus Jones is shown storming off into the locker rooms. Coach Rashad is hysterically laughing at Jones expense. Rampage is seemingly bothered from his 0-4 start, and doesn’t look to be convinced that Sims is going to be the fighter to put a stop to the slide.

TUF 10 ApparelWren, the youngest fighter in the house, is highly regarded on Team Evans and looked at as their “top-dog”. He plans on using his superior wrestling and aggressiveness in order to wear Wes Sims down. In addition to his strengths, he believes that his youth will aid him in this fight.

Sims plans on coming out and pressuring Wren and thinks that Wren’s wrestling will not bother him at all. Sims trains on a regular basis with elite wrestlers such as Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman. The off-beat Sims believes that he will either “win viciously or lose devastatingly.”

After an amusing weigh-in featuring both heavyweights in their less-than-appealing underwear, the fight was on.

Round one begins with no touch of gloves; it’s all business with these two. Wren goes immediately for the takedown but can’t convert on his first attempt. Sims clinches with his back to the wall, and then separates from Wren taking a knee for his troubles.

As they both re-position in the center of the octagon, Sims lands a front kick but it vulnerable for a takedown. Wren sees his opportunity, secures a body lock and cashes in on the takedown. When they hit the canvas, Wren transitions to side control, into north/south position, and finally back to side control. The last transition proves to be dominating when he locked in an arm triangle, putting Sims in deep trouble.

Sims, a grizzled veteran, does not tap right away, however it looks to be only a matter of time before the inevitable happens. Wren squeezes tighter and puts Sims to sleep. Wren takes the official decision in round 1 via arm triangle submission.

The “bossman,” Dana White thinks that Sims has seen his better days. He does confess that he is truly impressed with the performance of the youngster Wren.

Rampage again chooses not to join his defeated fighter in the octagon after the loss. The fifth straight loss is definitely taking a toll on the former Light Heavyweight Champ. For the second straight week, Rashad helps his opponent with the mental part of the loss.

The Ultimate Fighter logoWith only minutes remaining in the action-packed fifth episode, both coaches confront each other in the hallway of the training center. Neither Rampage nor Evans would back down and had to be separated from the confrontation coming to blows.

The teaser for Episode 6 shows Team Evans number one pick, Kimbo Slice possibly returning to the cage. Something tells me that Kimbo will get a second chance and it may come sooner rather than later.

Tune in next week to find out!
