The Ultimate Fighter 10: Heavyweights - Episode 6 Recap & ReviewRecap of Zak Jensen vs Darrill Schoonover on TUF 10 Episode 6
As episode six of The Ultimate Fighter 10 begins, Team Rashad’s social outcast Darrill Schoonover sits at the dining room table with a beer in front of him at 8 AM prompting others in the house to question his dedication to fighting. Upon arriving at the house and into the training center, Team Rashad is welcomed with one of the top coaches in all of MMA, Phil Nurse. Nurse is the coach behind the UFC’s successful welterweight champion, George St. Pierre. After a lackluster performance in the octagon during an early training session, Coach Rashad pulls Darrill aside trying to stress the importance of the show. He suggests to Darrill to forget about the drinking while still in the competition. Darrill says that he will comply with the advice from Evans and try to stay away from the liquor. When Rampage arrives for his training session, he again starts to harass Darrill, by belittling him with names. Darrill takes the good-natured hazing for a little bit but enough is enough and shoots back at the mouth toward Rampage. When Darrill goes as far as saying that he will drop down to 205 to fight ‘Page, he loses it and gets in Darrill’s face before being separated by teammates. For the fight announcement Rashad chooses Schoonover to fight Team Rampage’s team outcast, Zak Jensen. After the two square off, Rampage is at it again, calling Schoonover out in front of the entire cast. When Schoonover retaliates by stepping towards Rampage, he takes offense to it. Rampage threatens his new found rival and dares him to a fight. Rashad, trying to play peacekeeper, and gets in between Darrill and Rampage before it can go any farther. Rashad tried to talk logically to Rampage but he was having none of it. Rampage had enough and told Rashad to get out of his face.
On the ride home from a training session, Kimbo gives Zak the nickname “Linderman,” and for no particular reason begins to call him by that name. The heat continues to affect Zak as several of the fighters for Team Evans are trying to break him. It goes as far as Wes Sims composing a pool as to what day Zak will lose his temper.
Tiki Ghosn, Team Rampage’s lead coach, pulls a picture of Team Rashad’s team out that was made by a cartoonist, depicting one distinct characteristic for each member. And after they have a quick laugh about the picture, the focus turns toward Zak and his practice time. Kimbo throws in his two cents believing that Zak lacks confidence in his skills. Rampage agrees stating that he needs more mental coaching than physical coaching. Rampage does give a glimmer of hope after practice, as he stresses that he is proud of the improvement Zak has made. On fight day, Tiki and Rampage continue to mess with Darrill by writing all over his name plate on his dressing room, trying to mess with his mental status before the fight. When Darrill sees it, he tries not to let it get to him too much. His coaches try to do their best to cover it up and talk him down from any built up anger.
As the fighters are lead into the cage, Minnesota-based Jensen looks focused and relaxed where as Darrill looks calm, cool, and collected. When the bell rings, it doesn’t take long before each fighter is connecting with leather to the face of their opponent. Darrill is the first to get under-hooks and pressing Zak against the fence. Zak spins Darrill around and lands some uppercuts up the middle. Darrill fights back by using knees and punches, landing five or six unanswered before pulling guard. Immediately Darrill goes for a triangle choke; Zak responds well connecting with several punches to Darrill’s face. Still caught in the triangle choke, Zak is struggling for air and before you know it, unconscious. Darrill makes it 6 for 6 with a 1st round triangle choke.
