The Ultimate Fighter 11: Team Liddell vs. Team Ortiz - Episode 6: “Did Your Dizzle” Recap

Recap of Episode 6 of the TUF 11 fight between Court McGee and Nick Ring

We are now almost half-way through this season of the Ultimate Fighter, and I must say, with each passing week the episode titles – in this case, Episode 6: “Did Your Dizzle” – get more and more hilariously bad. Seriously, what poet comes up with these gems.

Anyway, with the Jenna Jameson – Tito Ortiz drama dying as fast as it was born, we can now take our prying eyes off Tito and celebrate Cino De Mayo with the Mexican-American fighter. Might I suggest, in honor of this holiday that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, you read this article while listening to “Tequila” by The Champs on repeat?

The episode begins with Team Punishment driving back from last week's fight between McCray and Bryant disappointed. They have now lost 4 of the first 5 fights and Kyasey believes it’s due to Tito overtraining them. He blames McCray’s loss on the fact that Tito worked him so hard days before the fight.

Chuck Liddell returns back to the TUF gym after finishing his “prior commitments” and is happy to hear that Bryant took home the victory for Team Liddell.

Yager and McCray are chilling in their room, and discussing Kyacey’s belief that they are being over-trained. Yager and McCray both disagree with Kyacey and enjoy the hard training they’ve been enduring. Yager says, “As far as I’m concerned, I think Tito is doing a great job.”

Other fighters on Team Punishment are also happy about the way Tito is training them, including Hammortree and Nick Ring.

Tito finds out about Kyacey’s complaints and brings the team together during the training session to discuss the differences. Tito calls out Kyacey, and Kyacey says that, “If a guy has a fight coming up, two days before the fight he should be chilling.”

Tito tells him that he needs to stay mentally positive, and that all these losses are playing with their heads. Tito sees Kyacey’s complaints as a blessing in disguise that could end up bringing Team Punishment together. Tito is confident in his training regime, and has no doubt about it that the winner of this season’s Ultimate Fighter will be a Team Punishment fighter.

Dana announces that this season the Coach’s Challenge will be dodgeball, with the winning coach getting $10,000 and each fighter of the winning team getting $1,000.

The first game starts off and Chuck is “beasting.” Chuck wins the game by hitting Tito in the end.

In game 2, it comes down to just Chuck and Tito, and Chuck blasts Tito in the knees. Tito seems pissed.

In game 3, it’s just Chuck and Tito again in the end. Chuck catches Tito with a bullet to the legs and goes nuts celebrating his dominating vicotry. Tito takes it well, even though he and his team got blasted.

Dana says that Chuck is a smart guy, and has outmaneuvered Tito thus far in the season, and he thinks it has to be getting into Tito’s head at this point.

Tito says good thing it was only dodgeball, because if it was a fight, he’d be hitting Chuck with a punch or an elbow in the face.

Chuck has control of the fight selection again and chooses Curt McGeee, his second to last pick, vs. Nick Ring, Tito’s first pick. Dana says he thinks Ring is a fighter who could go all the way this season, even still, he believes Chuck knows what he’s doing and probably knows something we don’t about Ring.

McGee says he fights because he loves it. He enjoys getting punched, getting hurt, and fighting through it.

Liddell thinks Ring is a good kicker who will utilize his kicking ability if McGee stays in his range, and drives home the point that McGee will need to either say way inside or way outside.

Hackleman says that McGee is so ready, he would match McGee with Godzilla at this point.

McGee is talking with the other fighters and tells them that he was once addicted to dugs and alcohol, including heroin. One time, he says, he overdosed and “died”, but was resuscitated. He hasn’t drunk or used drugs in over 1300 days, and believes himself to be “a lot different guy.”

During one of Team Punishment’s sparring sessions, McCray takes Hammortree and something “pops” in Hammortree’s back. The EMTs come in and take him out on a stretcher.

Tito says for the wildcard spot was between Hammortree and McCray, and now with Hammortree out, it may be McCray.

Nick Ring says he was out of the MMA game for over three years due to knee injuries and is happy to be back in shape. Tito says Nick has been putting in the hard work and should get the win via TKO in the first round.

Hammortree returns from the hospital and says the doctor, based on x-rays, thinks it may just be a bulging disk. Hammortree is glad that it’s not worse, and is something he can heal from.

The fighters discuss the upcoming fight between Ring and McGee. Kyacey says Nick is legit, and thinks he will catch McGee on the ground in round 2.

Hammortree thinks Ring is one of the toughest guys on the show and expects him win the fight.

Team Liddell thinks Ring is overhyped and McGee will be able to pull off the upset.

Ring says MMA is the most raw, pure sport that’s out there and that’s why he loves it.

Hackleman talks with McGee and tells him that Ring isn’t a knockout puncher or kicker, he says Ring’s 10-0 record is meaningless because he fought fighters with a bad records.

McGee comes to the Octagon first. Ring comes in after him and says he apologizes in advance for hurting McGee.

Court McGee vs. Nick Ring

McGee vs Ring - Round 1

We get a Chandella Powell booty shot and the fight begins.

McGee takes Ring down early in the round, but is unable to do anything from Ring’s guard. Ring makes his way back to his feet and they work the stand-up for some time. Neither fighter lands anything substantial, and McGee decides to shoot for another takedown.

Ring stuffs the takedown and is able to get McGee’s back. Unable to look in the hooks, Ring takes McGee to side-mount and eventually ends up in McGee’s guard. He throws a few solid hooks and elbows to score some points as the round comes to an end.

I score the round 10-9 for Ring.

McGee vs Ring - Round 2

The Ultimate Fighter logoTito tells Ring to step to his right, and that’s it’s his time to shine. The round beings.

Ring steps to his left to start off the round, disregarding Tito’s advice. He lands some nice legkicks and McGee looks uncomfortable on his feet this round as he keeps switching stance.

Eventually McGee becomes comfortable and lands some nice uppercuts from the clinch. Ring doesn’t throw much and McGee seemingly overwhelms him for the remainder of the round. No significant shot lands, but McGee outscores the unaggressive Ring with his boxing.

I score the round 10-9 for McGee and expect a third round.

Chuck argues with Yager about who won. Each defending their teammate.

Surprisingly, a decision has come in and there will be no third round.

Judge #1 - 20-18

Judge #2 - 19-19

Judge #3 - 20-18

Nick Ring defeats Court McGee via majority decision.

Ring says he was expecting to finish McGee and is disappointed that he couldn’t.

Dana says he doesn’t know how they could have given the second round to McGee. I agree.

Liddell is pissed and grills Dana, but Dana says don’t get made at him, he’s not the judge, he thinks it was bullshit too. Chuck throws his water bottle against the wall and heads back to the locker room.

McGee says that was his first loss since 2007 and hopes to come back strong next time.

It was a terrible decision, and both Judge #1 and #3 were judges who came over from boxing, so I’m a bit surprised they gave Ring round 2 considering it was McGee landing the better punches and Ring landing the better kicks. Tito says it’s only fair, considering that his fighters have been jobbed out of two wins thus far.

On the next episode, a nagging injury may keep Nick Ring out of the next round of competition, Joe Henle faces off against Nic Baczynski, and Chuck and Tito announce the wildcard fight. So if you don’t get Spike, can’t find a suitable website that streams it, or just like reading recaps of shows you’ve already watched, check back next Thursday for episode 6’s recapitulation.
