The Ultimate Fighter 9: U.S. vs. U.K. Episode 7 Recap & Review

Following a torrid Episode 6 that saw two fighters—one each from the U.S. and U.K. squads respectively—earn their way into the semifinal round, Episode 7 seemed to settle down a bit, as coach Bisping favorite David Faulkner got set to do battle with Henderson’s stoic Jason Pierce.

Highlights of the episode included some comedic scenes of Team U.K.’s new training techniques—supervised by coach Bisping—involving sledgehammers, tires, ripped mats and bruised shin bones, while Team U.S. took a bit of a break from jumping down each others throats—though Jason Dent did voice his displeasure with the immaturity and disrespect much of his Team shared with one another, dubbing a “bash room” to symbolize his disgust—in order to worry about a small infection contracted by U.S. lightweight Richie Whitson.

Pierce did little to dispel comments mad by Henderson and his assistant coach that he was a downer and a “pain in the neck,” as he refused to partake in portions of his team’s training sessions and went on a Lysol-spraying fit after learning of Whitson’s infectious skin condition.

The Ultimate Fighter logoThe tension was broken by this season’s Coach’s Challenge, a game of Tennis with the winning coach gaining $10,000 for himself and $1,500 for each of his team members. Although Bisping battled back from a serious early deficit, Henderson ultimately schooled the Brit on the court, earning a few well-natured jabs from Bisping, who referred to their upcoming UFC 100 bout as the true score-settler.

In an ironic turn of events, early concern for an injury suffered by Pierce was replaced by greater concern for an infected wound suffered by Faulkner—the result of a sledgehammer training mishap. After recovering from his own minor infection, and despite Henderson’s reluctance to allow him to fight after missing several training sessions, U.S. lightweight Richie Whitson was tapped as a replacement, set to take on U.K. banger Ross Pearson in quarterfinal action.

After a pair of powerful takedowns from Pearson to start the match, referee Herb Dean was forced to halt the bout after an illegal knee to a downed opponent, giving Whitson the opportunity to recover.

Some aggressive clinching resumed following the restart, but Pearson continued to demoralize a game Whitson with repeated slams and complete physical dominance, eventually working to Whitson’s back before transitioning to the fight-ending armbar with 3:39 gone in the first round.

Team U.K. takes a comfortable and controlling 4-2 lead in tournament action as a disappointed Team U.S. looks on. Only four fighters have yet to compete in quarterfinal action. For Team U.S., lightweight Jason Dent and welterweight Jason Pierce will do battle with U.K. lightweight Jeff Lawson and welterweight David Faulkner.
