The Ultimate Fighter 9: U.S. vs. U.K. Episode 8 Recap & Review
Apparently viewers are not alone in their complete lack of interest for Team U.S. welterweight fighter Jason Pierce and his nearly endless array of physical and possibly psychological issues. His very presence in the house seems a crude metaphor playing on the very real infection he suffers on his leg, as Team U.K. avoids him and Team U.S. complains about him.
Coach Henderson, having caught on to Pierce’s attitude in recent episodes, openly questions his will to fight and overall psychological state, and, along with UFC President Dana White, confronts the stricken fighter with their questions. While Pierce is adamant that he wants to continue in the competition, White is not impressed, and it remains to be seen if the welterweight will muster up the will to battle the U.K.’s David Faulkner—his closest friend and confident in the house—in Episode 9 next week.
While he is not criticized to the same degree as the aforementioned Pierce, Dent’s own attitude is questioned by Henderson and his assistant coaches, all of whom agree that the Ohio native is exceedingly difficult to coach. Dent, who has previous experience fighting for the UFC in the past, appears set in his rhythmus and habits of training, even if they clash with the ideologies presented by his coaches.
The inherent weaknesses of Dent’s maverick fighting style are seemingly put on display in the first round of his contest with Lawson when the latter takes complete control with superior ground work and positioning over a slow and seemingly lethargic Dent. While Dent’s attitude and bearing change little from the first round to the second—much to the chagrin of his coaches—he seizes a picture-perfect opportunity to pull off the fight-ending anaconda choke at 2:38 of the second. With Dent’s victory, Team U.S. pulls to within one of Bisping’s squad, 4-3. The lightweight semifinalists are set and ready to go, and only one bout remains in the welterweight quarterfinals. It should be interesting to see what comes of the mess of injuries, poor attitudes, and apparent lack of motivation that plagues that particular match up.
